Some FSEs have experienced various issues while installing the RE feature. Below are some notes regarding RE (Redundant Electronics) installations from feedback obtained from field personnel. The Installation Instructions are reviewed on an on going basis.

Purpose

RE (Redundant Electronics) Discussion - Observations and Recommendations from Experience.

Troubleshooting Steps

  • When installing the upgrade it is not necessary to power off the entire library. This puts unnecessary strain on the drives and complicates customer preparations for passing the library to the FSEs for the upgrade.
  • Before removing or inserting any cards execute the "hwActivation redundantElectronics enable" CLI command in preparation for subsequent steps.
  • It is a good practice to ERS the library to keep the robotics from repeated boots, to control what code stays on the robotics and to prevent a possible interrupted code load. Release the ERS switch after the new hardware is configured and functional.
  • Use the "recontrol status" command issued to the CLI to verify the status of the installation. The display will look like the following in a fully functional RE install.
Notice the the system is in a "Duplex" state and "Switch is Possible"

  • Make sure you and your customer fully understand the implementation and what it means to IP addresses, connections, commands and configurations (HSC/ACSLS). Provide appropriate documentation and contact a AFE/FSE that is familiar with RE or support for advice and direction.
  • When using the "clone" command this DOE NOT create all the IP information for the "B" side unless all the 2B and 2A addresses are specified in the command. Otherwise it only creates the structure for the "B" side network and routes. You must then configure the IP addresses for the "B" side using the "network config side < a | b >" command to do any specific networking configuration. Using this command and the appropriate print commands is a good final check of your IP configuration.
  • The "clone" command copies the "A" side structure to the "B" side, not the active to standby.
  • If Dual or Multi-TCP/IP is part of the installation make sure these features are properly licensed and you are prepared to install capacity keys afterwards. Installing a Dual TCP/IP, Multi TCP/IP or Partitioning feature in a grandfathered machine will cause all features to lock down and require licenses for these three and also for capacity.
  • If capacity licenses are installed, you must select and activate the cells before giving the machine back to the customer.
  • If upgrading a complex (more than one SL8500 in a string) remove the ILC cable connected to the 1A ports from all machines during the installation. Reconnect and establish the complex only after all the libraries are booted, fully functional and at the SAME code level.
  • The second ILC port cable for the "B" side controller is NOT provided in the upgrade kit. Be prepared to provide this cable(s) locally. It will be installed from every new "B" side HBCR card back to the ILC switch that already has the "A" side connections.
  • When installing the HBCR and HBT cards make sure you have removed the vacancy plates, it makes pin damage less likely when installing the cards.
  • You MUST visually inspect the pins in the cardcage BEFORE inserting any cards. If the pins are bent, STOP and order a replacement cardcage. You cannot repair a bent pin in the cardcage, it will break if bent back.
  • Do NOT use the card ejectors to insert a card unless it is first sitting on the pins of the motherboard. Do this by holding the card by its edge and "search" for the pins by rocking the card from side to side and up and down until you feel the card drop onto the pins and its face is sitting square in relation to the cardcage and other cards. Then you can either use the ejectors or your thumbs to insert the card (I prefer using my thumbs because the tactile feedback is better).

  • When swapping cards be sure to use the "recontrol eject " command from the CLI.
  • If a cardcage is damaged you can bring the library up on either the "A" or "B" side as long as you have enabled RE with the "hwActivation redundantElectronics enable"
  • It is highly recommended that you be involved in an RE upgrade with an experienced FSE before attempting to perform an upgrade on your own.
  • Ask, ask , ask someone with RE install experience if you are unfamiliar with any of the RE instructions or requirements.  Contact support if you experience a problem during an upgrade.
