Cannot Read / Write / Recognize Media

Troubleshooting Steps

Please make sure the appropriate TBU device driver has been installed for your operating system and backup software. Refer to the backup software’s user manual for the proper configuration parameters for your backup job.

Use the built-in diagnostic function “F” to test the write/read operation of the drive itself without any host attached. Run this test first to isolate tape drive related issues. Please refer to the service guide for instructions on running the diagnostic test.

DP1: For the external drive, is there a code displayed on the single-character display and the status light flashes amber?
R1: Yes, the tape drive detected an error
A1: Refer to IBM LTO User’s Guide for the informational message of the error code.

Should you continue to have issues with the LTO drive in question, open a Service Request to the Oracle TSC with details of the problem and provide a LTO drive dump for analysis.

Displayed Error Conditions

Problem Description     Error Code                         Cause and Recommended Action

Cooling Problem              1                                  High temperature detected- over 48 degree C.
Ensure the adequate airflow and operating
temperature is within the specified range. Clears with
Power cycle after drive cooling restored.

Power Problem                 2                                  Externally supplied power is outside of specified
voltage limits. Ensure that power connector is properly
seated and DC voltages are within the tolerances
                                                                         allowed. Clears with Power cycle.

Firmware Problem             3                                 Firmware error has occurred. Power cycle the drive,
retry the operation, if problem persists, download new
firmware and retry the operation. If problem still
                                                                         persists, contact support center.

Firmware or Drive              4                                 A drive hardware or microcode failure has occurred.
Hardware                                                            Power cycle the drive, retry the operation, if problem
persists, download new firmware and retry the
operation. If problem still persists, contact support
                                                                         center. Clears with Power cycle.

Drive Hardware                 5                                 A drive hardware problem. The drive determined that a
tape path or read/write error occurred. Drive will not
allow continued use until power cycled. If problem
                                                                        persists, replace the drive.

Drive or Media                  6                                An error occurred, but drive cannot isolate it to faulty
hardware or media. Try the same operation with another
known good cartridge, if problem persist, run the “Function
F” test in the maintenance mode twice with two different
cartridges. If both Function F fail then return the drive.
Otherwise, the cartridge could be faulty.

Media Error                       7                                An error occurred because of faulty media. Try another tape
cartridge. Ensure the FMR tape was not inserted. Clears
                                                                        when media is unloaded.

SCSI Bus Interface or        8                                Channel failure has occurred. The error condition clears
FC Error                                                             after 10 seconds if the error condition does not reoccur.

Library RS422                   9                                A drive hardware or RS-422 interface failure has occurred.
Interface                                                           Perform RS-422 wrap test to verify the RS-422 interface is in
good condition, also verify the LDI connection by library
vendor. if problem persist, return the drive. The error
condition clears after 10 seconds if the error condition does
                                                                        not reoccur.

Hardware Error                  A                                Problem occurred which degraded drive
performance, but did not prevent continued
operation. Run the “Function F” test twice with two
different cartridges, if both tests fail, then return the
                                                                        drive.

Not Assigned                    B                                ----

Clean Required                C                                The tape drive needs to be cleaned. This condition clears once drive is cleaned.

Fibre Port Offline              E                                The Fibre Port is offline.

No Fibre Light                   F                                Displayed if dip switch 3 is ‘on’ and the drive does
not see light, or when a fiber wrap diagnostic fails
because drive did not see light.

Write Protect                    P                                Write operation to a write protected cartridge has been attempted.

Fiber AL_PA conflict           d                                2 drives on fiber loop have the same AL_PA.

Encryption Error                 e                                The drive detected a configuration or set-up error prior to an encryption operation.
