In order to provide you the most accurate fix, please validate that each statement under the symptoms below is true for your environment. These symptoms will hyperlink you into a relevant content that will 1) tell you how to validate the listed symptom and 2) how to fix the symptom if it is true for your environment. The listed symptoms are ordered in the most appropriate sequence to isolate the issue and be certain about the related fix. Please do not skip a step.

Purpose

This document will assist in troubleshooting (and documenting) the complex cabling schemes associated with the Sun Storage 3000 arrays.  The primary use of this doc is two fold:

  • When re-purposing a Sun Storage 3000 Array (a "new" installation).
  • When troubleshooting an existing Sun Storage 3000 Array.  Reference <Document 1011431.1> Troubleshooting Sun Storage 3000 Array Series Hardware.

A variety of symptoms can occur which may warrant a verification of cabling. Some of the observed anomalies include.

  • The Logical Disk is missing from probe-scsi-all at Open Boot Prom (OBP), or from format in the OS.
  • sccli output for show events returns Data Phase Parity Errors.
  • The /var/adm/messages file on the host is returning SCSI transport errors and resets.
  • There is an audible alarm on the array.
  • Amber Fault Lights are on. LED status indicators are off.
  • Drive Channel speeds have been reduced.

Here are some of the more typical errors observed in /var/adm/messages (parsed data)

  [ID 107833 kern.warning] WARNING:/pci@1c,600000/scsi@2,1 (glm1):
Connected command timeout for Target 0.0
  genunix: [ID 408822 kern.info] NOTICE: glm1: fault detected in device;
  service still available
Target 0 disabled wide SCSI mode
Target 0 reverting to async. Mode

SCSI transport failed: reason 'reset': retrying command
  [ID 457922 daemon.error] Gross Phase/Signal Error Detected(Ch:0).
Check drive seating, cables, and IO module. Replace as required. Redundant
  controllers failed to bind.  (Primary) {SN#0041c7}

  [ID 107833 kern.warning] WARNING: /pci@1d,700000/ pci@1/scsi@5/sd@0,1 (sd95):
SCSI transport failed: reason 'reset': retrying command

  [ID 107833 kern.warning] WARNING: /pci@1d,700000/ pci@1/scsi@5/sd@0,2 (sd96):
Error for Command: write(10) Error Level: Retryable

Here, we see sccli reporting host channel 3 not operating at full bandwidth.

sccli> show channels
Ch Type Media Speed Width PID / SID
--------------------------------------------
0 Drive SCSI 80M Wide 6 / 7
1 Host SCSI 80M Wide 0 / N/A
2 Drive SCSI 80M Wide 6 / 7
3 Host SCSI ASYNC Narrow N/A / 1
6 RCCOM FC(L) 1G Narrow N/A / N/A
7 Host LAN N/A Serial N/A / N/A

Troubleshooting Steps

Once again, the primary troubleshooting steps to follow are in <Document 1011431.1> Troubleshooting Sun Storage 3000 Array Series Hardware. Use this document to verify a correct cabling scheme for the array. If cabling is correct, then continue with <Document 1011431.1>.

To verify a 3310 and 3320 cabling schemes, see the Sun StorEdge 3000 Family Installation, Operation, and Service Manual

  • All JBOD cabling is documented in Appendix B
  • Single and Split Bus Configurations with (and without), expansion trays starts at Chapter 4.
  • 3120 cabling schemes begin with Chapter 4.6

To verify the correct cables are being used.

Perform an LED inspection of all I/O modules (Controllers and Expansion Trays)

  • See Chapter 5 of the Sun StorEdge 3000 Family Installation, Operation, and Service Manual for the 3310 and 3320 Arrays.
  • See Chapter 6 of the Sun StorEdge 3000 Family Installation, Operation, and Service Manual for the 3120 Array.
