Purpose

This article addresses and attempts to troubleshoot upgrade failures of Sun Fire[TM] V1280/E2900 and Netra[TM] 1280/1290 Server Firmware, when using lom -G.

Troubleshooting Steps

Symptoms

  • The System Controller (SC) may have reset, and is now unresponsive
  • The Solaris[TM] command lom -G gives an error, or does not complete
  • The installation or upgrade may seem to be corrupt, faulty, bad
  • The system may hang, pause, become unresponsive, or similar behavior during the upgrade process.

System Type and Configuration

  • Sun Fire[TM] v1280
  • Sun Fire[TM] E2900
  • Netra[TM] 1280
  • Netra[TM] 1290

Assumptions

  • The System Controller (SC) is up and the domain is up and running.

Steps to Follow
Please validate that each troubleshooting step below is true for your environment. Each step will provide instructions or a link to a document for validating the step and taking corrective action as necessary. The steps are ordered in the most appropriate sequence to isolate the issue and identify the proper resolution. Please do not skip a step.

1. Verify the error message is not  Programming LOM Failed with Error: Resource Temporarily Unavailable

  • This issue is resolved by resetting the SC and reissuing the  lom -G  command.

  •  See Document: 1010536.1 Sun Fire[TM] V1280/E2900 and Netra[TM] 1280 Servers: Programming LOM Failed with Error: Resource Temporarily Unavailable

2. Verify the system controller is not hung.

3.  Verify user is logged onto the system containing the firmware patch as root.

For navigation between shells, reference the Sun Fire Midrange Systems Platform Administration Manual

4. Verify the system has lom packages installed

  • Use the pkginfo command to confirm that SUNWlom installed, for example:

#pkginfo |grep lom
system SUNWlomm LOMlite manual pages
system SUNWlomr LOMlite driver (root)
system SUNWlomu LOMlite Utilities (usr)
  • Reference Document: 1004868.1 SunFire[TM] V1280/E2900 and Netra[TM] 1280: Lights Out Management (LOM) packages are missing

5. Verify that the downloaded firmware patch is not corrupt.

  • Reference the firmware patch matrix document Document: 1010756.1 Sun Fire[TM] Mid-Range Servers ScApp Features and Requirements Matrix

6. Verify that the files have the appropriate permissions set:

This is an example of a system with the  proper permissions set.

7. While capturing  script  data, confirm that another attempt to upgrade the firmware with lom -G by using the absolute path has failed.

  • Reference Document: 1004222.1 How to setup console logging and obtain diagnostic data from different types of SPARC(R) and X64 servers

8. At this point, if you have validated that each troubleshooting step above is true for your environment, and the issue still exists, further troubleshooting is required.  Verify scripted output is available and open a Service Request to Oracle Support.
