FIELD ENGINEER/ADMINISTRATOR INSTRUCTIONS

PROBLEM OVERVIEW: An Exadata X7-2 Storage Cell Server has a faulted internal cable that needs replacement

WHAT STATE SHOULD THE SYSTEM BE IN TO BE READY TO PERFORM THE RESOLUTION ACTIVITY?:

IMPORTANT NOTE TO TSC ENGINEER:  CUT & PASTE the “CUSTOMER ACTIVITY” sections of the Pre-Replacement and Post-Replacement steps into a SR Note and ensure the customer is aware to do these steps prior to the scheduled field engineer activity, and during and after the replacement activity.

CUSTOMER ACTIVITY:

Shutdown of the storage cell is required prior to the part replacement:

Complete Steps 1 to 6 of Note ID 1188080.1 “Steps to shut down or reboot an Exadata storage cell without affecting ASM”.

Where noted, the SQL, CellCLI and commands under ‘root’ should be run by the Customers DBA, unless the Customer provides login access to the Field Engineer

These steps are also provided in the documentation:
   https://docs.oracle.com/cd/E80920_01/DBMMN/maintaining-exadata-storage-servers.htm#DBMMN21128

WHAT ACTION DOES THE FIELD ENGINEER/ADMINISTRATOR NEED TO TAKE?:

Prepare the Server for Service

The customer should have already prepared the server and powered it off.  If not, provide them the instructions in the previous section.

1. Extend the server to the maintenance position
2. Disconnect the power cords from the power supplies.
3. Attach an anti-static wrist strap to your wrist and to a metal area on the chassis or the rack.
4. Remove the server top cover. Use a Torx T10 screwdriver to unlock the release button latch.

Caution - Ensure that all power is removed from the server before removing or installing the cables. You must disconnect the power cables from the system before performing these procedures.

Caution - These procedures require that you handle components that are sensitive to electrostatic discharge. This sensitivity can cause the component to fail. To avoid damage, ensure that you follow safe anti-static practices.

The following cables are included in the Oracle Server X7-2L Cable Kit - 7344289 [F] Cable Kit:

  • 7315469 11-Pin Front Interface Module Cable, 600mm
  • 7315471 10-Pin DC Power Cable, 420mm
  • 7315475 6-Pin PCI Express Power Cable, 150mm
  • 7315479 3-Pin Temperature Sensor Cable, 170mm
  • 7344627 34-Pin Backplane Data Cable, 445mm
  • 7348058 Serial Management Cable

Replacing the Front Indicator Module Cable

7315469 11-pin Front Interface Module Cable - use the replacement procedure detailed in Doc ID 2359465.1.

Replacing the Disk Backplane DC Power Cable

7315471 10-Pin DC Power Cable

Removal:
1. Using your forefinger and thumb, lift Fan Module 2 straight up and out of the chassis and set it aside on an anti-static mat.

2. Open the latch on the SuperCap tray and swing it up from the air baffle.

3. Lift up and remove the air baffle.

4. Unlatch and disconnect the cable at the disk backplane, and at the power supply riser board.

5. Lift up and remove the cable from the routing channel in the middle of the server.

Installation:
1. Run the cable through the routing channel in the middle of the server.

2. Connect the cable at the disk backplane, and at the power supply riser board

3. Lower the air baffle back into place over the DIMMs and CPU's.

4. Lower and clip the SuperCAP tray back into the air baffle.

5. Install Fan Module 2. The fan module is keyed to ensure it is installed in the correct orientation. Press down on the fan module to fully seat the fan module.

Replacing the PCI Express Power Cable

7315475 6-Pin PCI Express Power Cable - this cable is not used in Exadata X7-2 Storage Cell Server configurations

Replacing the Temperature Sensor Cable

7315479 3-Pin Temperature Sensor Cable - use the replacement procedure detailed in Doc ID 2359483.1.

Replacing the Disk Backplane Data Cable

7344627 34-Pin Backplane Data Cable

Removal:
1. Unlatch the disk backplane data cable from the motherboard connector slot.

Note - You might need to disconnect the SAS cable connections from the Oracle Storage 12 Gb SAS PCIe RAID HBA, Internal card in PCIe slot 11 to access the disk backplane data cable motherboard connection. To ease removal of the cable, slightly lift the SAS cable bundles from the cable trough along the left side of the chassis.

2. Unlatch the disk backplane data cable from the disk backplane connector slot.

3. Carefully lift up and remove the cable from along the left chassis wall and out of the chassis.

Installation:
1. Carefully install and route the cable along the left chassis wall, similar to how the previous cable was installed.

2. Latch the disk backplane data cable to the disk backplane connector slot. Press to ensure the latch locks are closed.

3. Latch the disk backplane data cable to the motherboard connector slot. Press to ensure the latch locks are closed.

Note - Re-lay the SAS cable bundles on top of the disk backplane data cable and other cables carefully so they do not snag and lay fully into the chassis and will not interfere with the chassis lid closing.

Replacing the Serial Management Cable

7348058 Serial Management Cable

Removal:
1. Carefully pull up on the cable at the motherboard connector. The cable end will slide up and out of the connector housing.

2. Unlatch the RJ45 end from the socket.

3. Lift up and remove the cable.

Installation:
1. Latch the RJ45 end into the socket.

2. Route the cable in between the M2 Risers and around to the motherboard connector.

3. Carefully push the cable into the connector housing.

Return the Server to Operation

1. Install the server top cover. Use a Torx T10 screwdriver to lock the release button latch.
2. Reconnect the power cords to the server power supply and connect any other cables to their original locations.
3. Return the server to the normal rack position.
4. Once the power cords have been re-attached and the ILOM has booted you will see a slow blink on the green LED for the server. Power on the
server by pressing the power button on the front of the unit.
5. Connect to the server console via the ILOM and monitor the boot.
By default the ILOM serial console displays the primary console output.
In the event of unexpected boot behavior, it is advisable to connect to both ILOM serial and ILOM graphics consoles at the same time and monitor.

OBTAIN CUSTOMER ACCEPTANCE

WHAT ACTION DOES THE FIELD ENGINEER/ADMINISTRATOR NEED TO TAKE TO RETURN THE SYSTEM TO AN OPERATIONAL STATE?:

FIELD SERVICE ENGINEER and CUSTOMER ACTIVITY:

1. Verify all expected hardware is visible to the server and the fault is cleared. Assistance from the customer for server login access will be required.

2. Verify there are no outstanding faults in ILOM:

# ipmitool sunoem cli 'show faulty'
Connected. Use ^D to exit.
-> show faulty
Target | Property | Value
-------------------+-----------------------+-----------------------------------

-> Session closed
Disconnected
#

If there are faults still outstanding that did not auto-clear in ILOM after replacement, refer to the post-repair procedures section of Doc ID 1155200.1 to clear the fault.

3. Verify there are no outstanding alerts in the Cell:

# cellcli -e list alerthistory

4. Re-activate the Storage Cell grid disks.  Follow Steps 7 to 10 of Note ID 1188080.1 “Steps to shut down or reboot an Exadata storage cell without affecting ASM”.

Where noted, the SQL, CellCLI and commands under ‘root’ should be run by the Customers DBA, unless the Customer provides login access to the Field Engineer.
