Goal

How to decommission a ZFS-SA appliance and safely erase the data.

Solution

Recommendation is to remove the configuration from the appliance using the "factory reset" option.

But first you must destroy the pools / luns / and shares.

1)  Using the BUI - select each LUN and share in turn and use the "Bin icon" to remove/destroy the LUNs and shares.

Go to Shares > Shares
  Select Filesystems or LUNs
Hover over the filesystem or LUN you want to delete and click the bin icon to "remove /destroy entry"
  Click OK.

2)  Next destroy (unconfig) the pool and rebuild another pool using a different raid level.

Unconfiguring a pool renders data inaccessible, creates the potential for data loss, and fails inbound replications.

Go to Configuration > Storage
From the Available Pools list, select an online pool to unconfigure.
  Click UNCONFIG.

Please refer to the appliance online help for more details on the BUI / CLI usage and options.

3)  Then create one share and fill that with random data.    It's important to use all the drives available.

4)  Once this is done, factory reset the system to remove all current settings.

Performing a Factory Reset

Note - Factory reset of a standalone controller while configured into a cluster is not supported.

The controller must be unclustered first.

"Factory reset" resets the appliance configuration back to the factory settings of the current software version, and reboots the appliance.

All configuration changes are lost, and the appliance needs to go through initial configuration again, as when it was first installed.

To perform a factory reset:

BUI: Click the Factory Reset button on the Maintenance > System screen.
CLI: Enter the maintenance system context, then issue the factoryreset command.
