Oracle Communications Diameter Signaling Router (DSR) - Version DSR 5.0 and later
Information in this document applies to any platform.

Goal

This article is intended to address the question of whether a Diameter Signaling Router server can be backed out to a previous software release after the Accept Upgrade action has been performed.

Solution

The Diameter Signaling Router (DSR) software upgrade documentation contains a section called "Accept Upgrade" intended to instruct that part of the upgrade activity.  In that section , the document for each release makes it clear that once the Accept Upgrade action is executed, the server can no longer be rolled back or "downgraded" to the previous release.  [Example for 8.1: https://docs.oracle.com/cd/E86291_01/docs.81/E88699_rev_01.pdf Appendix A.1 Procedure 50 ]

The "Accept Upgrade" activity is typically conducted after all servers in a system have been upgraded and an evaluation period of several days has transpired.  Once the Accept Upgrade action is performed on a server, the server frees up file storage space occupied by data that enables rollback. Hence it is not possible to roll back to the previous release after that action.

Additional information:

If desired to be on the previous release, any server that has had the Accept Upgrade activity performed will have to be rebuilt using the previous software and possibly  backups taken prior to upgrade.  Depending on the role of the server and whether some or all of the servers in the DSR system have had their Accept Upgrade action conducted, there may be additional limitations on the ability to restore to the previous release.  Any restore (rebuild) to a previous software release is a non-standard activity, is not considered part of upgrade or normal maintenance, and may result in significant downtime and potentially lost data.  For Oracle assistance in such matters, contact your account representative to engage Oracle Consulting Services.
