Goal

 Zpool resilver/scrub performance and time.

Solution

Resilver speed depends on many factors:

  • zpool configuration.
  • I/O activity on the pool.
  • Speed of the disks.
  • Amount of memory on the system.
  • Data fragmentation.
  • Zpool percentage full

If customer has a failed disk in RAIDz configuration, rebuilding that would take more time as it has to go through all the disks in vdev. Building a failed mirrored disk in mirrored pool would be much faster as it has to copy from any good disk in the mirrors.

If system is quite busy, there would be lot of writes going on and which would make the resilver to slow down.

It also depends on how much fragmentation on the disk, as it has to do more reads to rebuild the disk.

zpool status usually gives an idea of the time to complete the scrub/resilver based on the I/O activity and the condition of the system.

If the load is low, you can see the speed improving or time required to complete resilver being reduced.
