Goal

This document shows how to check the firmware versions on the various Big Data Appliance rack components.

Solution

Note: "fwupdate" command is available in BDA v4.1.0 and later.  For earlier images, use the alternate method provided.

Note:  The output from the "fwupdate" commands shown below can be quite long on several single lines.  It may be shown on your screen wrapped onto the next line.  Maximizing your browser window and/or viewing in a landscape mode may help your viewing experience.

Check the server node ILOM/SP firmware

This example shows the ILOM version is v4.0.0.20 r120817 and the BIOS version is 42017100

ssh to the node

[root@bdanode ~]# fwupdate list sp_bios

==================================================
SP
==================================================
ID   Product Name         System Firmware Version    ILOM Version        BIOS/OBP Version   Fallback Boot Version   XML Support
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
sp   ORACLE SERVER X7-2L  -                          v4.0.0.20 r120817   42017100           -                       N/A

[root@bdanode ~]# exit

Alternate method via ssh to the ilom

-> version
SP firmware 4.0.0.20
SP firmware build number: 120817
SP firmware date: Sun Aug 20 16:43:13 PDT 2017
SP filesystem version: 0.3.170104

-> show /SYS/MB/BIOS fru_version

/SYS/MB/BIOS
   Properties:
       fru_version = 42017100

-> exit

Check the controller firmware (SAS HBA, IB HCA)

The sample below shows the HBA version is 4.720.00-8253 from package 24.19.0-0060 and the HCA version is 2.11.1280

ssh to the node

[root@bdanode ~]# fwupdate list controller

==================================================
CONTROLLER

[root@bdanode ~]# exit

Alternate method for the HBA

[root@bdanode ~]# /opt/MegaRAID/storcli/storcli64 /c0 show | grep FW
FW Package Build = 24.19.0-0060
FW Version = 4.720.00-8253

[root@bdanode ~]# exit

Alternate two step method for the HCA

#1 Identify the device id
#2 Query the device

[root@bdanode ~]# lspci | grep InfiniBand
46:00.0 InfiniBand: Mellanox Technologies MT27500 Family [ConnectX-3]

[root@bdanode ~]# mstflint -d 46:00.0 q | grep FW
FW Version: 2.11.1280

[bdanode ~]# exit

Check the disk firmware (HDD and SSD)

This example shows all HDDs have firmware version A374 and the SSD firmware is 0112.  Not all version of BDA have SSDs.

ssh to the node

[root@bdanode ~]# fwupdate list disk

ssh to the spine switch
login as: ilom-admin

Hostname: bdasw-ib1

-> version
SP firmware 2.2.7-1
SP firmware build number: 118629
SP firmware date: Fri Jun 9 13:38:19 CEST 2017
SP filesystem version: 0.0.3

-> exit

ssh to the leaf1 switch
login as: ilom-admin

Hostname: bdasw-ib2

-> version
SP firmware 2.2.7-1
SP firmware build number: 118629
SP firmware date: Fri Jun 9 14:23:48 CEST 2017

-> exit

ssh to the leaf2 switch
login as: ilom-admin

Hostname: bdasw-ib3

-> version
SP firmware 2.2.7-1
SP firmware build number: 118629
SP firmware date: Fri Jun 9 14:23:48 CEST 2017

-> exit

Check the Cisco Catalyst C4948E ethernet switch firmware (used before BDA X7-2)

The example below show the system image is bootflash:cat4500-ipbasek9-mz.150-2.SG9.bin

ssh to the Cisco switch
login as: admin

bdasw-ip>show version

[snip]

System image file is "bootflash:cat4500-ipbasek9-mz.150-2.SG9.bin"
[snip]

bdasw-ip> exit

Check the Cisco Nexus 93108TC ethernet switch firmware (used starting in BDA X7-2)

The example below shows BIOS version version 07.59 and NXOS version version 7.0(3)I5(2)

ssh to the Cisco switch
login as: admin

bdasw-ip# show version
[snip]

Software
BIOS: version 07.59
NXOS: version 7.0(3)I5(2)
BIOS compile time: 08/26/2016
NXOS image file is: bootflash:///nxos.7.0.3.I5.2.bin
NXOS compile time: 2/16/2017 8:00:00 [02/16/2017 12:03:27]

bdasw-ip# exit

Check the PDU firmware

This example shows the PDU firmware is V2.07.

Note: ssh is only supported on Enhanced PDU's which shipped with X5-2 and later. For earlier systems, access the PDU via the web browser and select the "Module Info" button. The version will be v1.0x.  v2.x firmware is not supported on v1.x PDU's.

ssh to the PDU

login as: admin

Welcome to Oracle PDU 'bdanode-pduX.company.com'

Login OK - Admin rights!

pducli->get pdu_firmware_version
pducli->pdu_firmware_version=V2.07 - 08.11.2016

pducli->exit
