Goal

Gather the information to resolve FICON connectivity issues

How to validate FICON paths

Solution

When VSM6 or VSM7 FICON issues are reported while in production or during new installs, before opening a service request or a collaboration to the TSC, gather the following information.  Reference the latest VSM6 or VSM 7 Installation, Configuration, and Service Guide for additional information.

1, Run a current SFB for both nodes.  See linked document.

2. Run a statesave collect on both nodes after experiencing the FICON connectivity issue.  See linked document.

3. Provide any supporting drawings or documents (such as configuration spreadsheets) that may help the TSC or engineering resolve the FICON issues more expediently.

Perform the following

1. Open an ssh session to the VSM7 node 1.  Make sure "All Session Output" for the putty session is being logged.
2. At the command prompt, enter the following to get access to the vsmadmin cli.

$cli

3. Run each of the following commands from the vsmadmin: prompt and provide the outputs.  Examples of these commands and outputs can be found in the VSM6 or VSM 7 Installation, Configuration, and Service Guide.

show system all or show fp (ficonport) all

show ficonpath all (if applicable)

validate ficonpath -pathnum FICON path number

4. Upload the putty log containing these outputs to the service request being worked.

5. In certain circumstances, engineering will request an ndss be run on the FICON interface ports.  Typically when an error, an ndss will be generated ie...  See the linked document 1907149.1

tikka_****_xx.ndss.gz
(where **** = the pid number for a port and
where xx = the seq_id number for the ndss in decimal)

ndss save -ficon
