Goal
What are the requirements in terms of bandwidth, latency, jitter etc... for replication to work properly between active and standby OCEEMS servers?
Solution
For replication between two geo redundant sites, the two parameters to note are:
1. Network reliability
Primary and secondary servers check health of each other via heart beat. A parameter HEART_BEAT_INTERVAL is used with a default value of 60 seconds.
This is duration after which both the primary and standby servers update their LASTCOUNT, signifying that they are working correctly.
So the network connection between two servers should be reliable enough to remain out of service for no more than 60 seconds.
If the 60 seconds are past and servers are not able to respond to each other, then failover mechanism kicks in.
2. Network bandwidth
The replication process starts with copying database from one and restoring the secondary with it.
Once that is done, only the changes are replicated across the servers. This way, the requirement for data transfer is not high during normal operation.
Exact bandwidth requirement can depend upon size of the database. There is no specific minimum requirement set for replication link but as long as connection is capable of reliably transferring a few GBs of data, it should be fine.
