DISPATCH INSTRUCTIONS:

WHAT SKILLS DOES THE FIELD ENGINEER/ADMINISTRATOR NEED?:
Exadata X7-2 Training

TIME ESTIMATE: 15 minutes

TASK COMPLEXITY: 1

FIELD ENGINEER/ADMINISTRATOR INSTRUCTIONS:

PROBLEM OVERVIEW: An Exadata X7-2 Storage Cell Server Fan Module needs replacement

WHAT STATE SHOULD THE SYSTEM BE IN TO BE READY TO PERFORM THE RESOLUTION ACTIVITY?:

IMPORTANT NOTE TO TSC ENGINEER:  CUT & PASTE the “CUSTOMER ACTIVITY” sections of the Pre-Replacement and Post-Replacement steps into a SR Note and ensure the customer is aware to do these steps prior to the scheduled field engineer activity, and during and after the replacement activity.

CUSTOMER ACTIVITY:

A fan module replacement is hot-swappable and can be replaced with the power on.

WHAT ACTION DOES THE ENGINEER/ADMINISTRATOR NEED TO TAKE?:

Prepare the Server for Service

A fan module replacement is hot-swappable and can be replaced with the power on. However when "hot replacing" a fan module with the system powered on the replacement must be done within 20 seconds to maintain adequate cooling within the system. Make sure that the replacement fan module is readily available and removed from it's packaging before starting this process.

1. Locate the cell that has the white LED lit that requires maintenance.
2. Extend the server to the maintenance position

3. Attach an anti-static wrist strap to your wrist and to a metal area on the chassis or the rack.
4. Remove the server top cover. Use a Torx T10 screwdriver to unlock the release button latch.

Caution - These procedures require that you handle components that are sensitive to electrostatic discharge. This sensitivity can cause the component to fail. To avoid damage, ensure that you follow safe anti-static practices.

Identifying and Removing a Faulty Fan Module

1. Identify the faulty fan module. Each fan module has a fan status indicator (LED) that is located next to the module. If the LED is amber, the fan module has failed.

2. Using your forefinger and thumb, lift the fan module straight up and out of the chassis and set it aside on an antistatic mat.

Caution - When removing a fan module, do not rock it back and forth. Rocking a fan module can cause damage to the motherboard connectors.

Caution - The ILOM requires the fan module be replaced within 20 seconds. Failure to have the replacement installed will cause an unexpected system shutdown.

Installing a Replacement Fan Module

1. Install the replacement fan module into the server. The fan modules are keyed to ensure that they are installed in the correct orientation.

2. Press down on the fan module to fully seat the fan module.

3. Verify that the fan module fault indicator (LED) on the replacement fan module is not illuminated.

Return the Server to Operation

1. Install the server top cover. Use a Torx T10 screwdriver to lock the release button latch.
2. Return the server to the normal rack position.

OBTAIN CUSTOMER ACCEPTANCE

WHAT ACTION DOES THE FIELD ENGINEER/ADMINISTRATOR NEED TO TAKE TO RETURN THE SYSTEM TO AN OPERATIONAL STATE:

FIELD SERVICE ENGINEER and CUSTOMER ACTIVITY:

1. Verify all expected hardware is visible to the server and the fault is cleared. Assistance from the customer for server login access will be required.

2. Verify there are no outstanding faults in ILOM:

# ipmitool sunoem cli 'show faulty'
Connected. Use ^D to exit.
-> show faulty
Target | Property | Value
-------------------+-----------------------+-----------------------------------
-> Session closed
Disconnected

3. Verify there are no outstanding alerts in the Cell:

# cellcli -e list alerthistory
