Goal

 How to replace the drive tray power supply card.

Solution

 DISPATCH INSTRUCTIONS
- WHAT SKILLS ARE REQUIRED?: Knowledge of the SL8500 and tape drives installed in the library.
- TIME ESTIMATE: 45 minutes
- TASK COMPLEXITY: 2
REMOVAL/REPLACEMENT INSTRUCTIONS:
- PROBLEM OVERVIEW: The power supply in the drive tray has been determined to be bad and requires replacement.
- WHAT STATE SHOULD THE SYSTEM BE IN TO BE READY TO PERFORM THE RESOLUTION ACTIVITY?: The drive needs to be offline from the system.
- WHAT ACTIONS ARE REQUIRED?:

Refer to the SL8500 Service Manual for complete instructions and pictures of this procedure.

Drive Power Supply Card: Removal:
Note – The drive tray assembly must be out of the library and on a suitable work surface (see“Drive Tray Removal/FRU Access Procedure” on page 240).
Caution – ESD Damage Potential: The Power Supply Card contains ESD-sensitive components. Improper handling could result in permanent damage to components. Make sure you follow ESD precautions and procedures.
1. Disconnect the drive power cable (P2, shown in FIGURE 2-11 on page 246) from the power supply card.
2. Disconnect the power-in cable (P1, shown in FIGURE 2-11 on page 246) from the power supply card.
3. Remove five T10 screws (1) shown in FIGURE 2-11 on page 246 that secure the card to the tray assembly.

4. Lift the power supply card out of the drive tray assembly.
5. Place the removed power supply card into an ESD-protective package, or onto an ESD-qualified surface.

Drive Power Supply Card: Replacement:
Caution – ESD Damage Potential: The Power Supply Card contains ESD-sensitive components. Improper handling could result in permanent damage to components. Make sure you follow ESD precautions and procedures.
1. Position the replacement power supply card onto the standoffs with the center mounting hole aligned.
2. Beginning with the center screw, insert and thread, five mounting screws.
Note – Do not fully tighten screws until all five are threaded.
3. Tighten all five screws to secure the card.
4. Connect the power-in cable (P1) to the power supply J1.
5. Connect the drive power cable (P2) to the power supply J2.
6. Go to “HBD (Environmental Monitor) Card: Removal” on page 257.

- WHAT ACTIONS ARE REQUIRED TO RETURN THE SYSTEM TO AN OPERATIONAL STATE?: Bring drive back online to the system and verify functionality.
