Goal

IBM LTO8 - How to Configure the LTO8 Full Height Drives to LDI (Legacy) Mode for SL3000 and SL8500 Libraries.

Solution

All IBM LTO8 Full Height Drives are going to ship in ADI mode instead of LDI mode as the previous generation IBM LTO drives did.

So for customers that are purchasing these drives for their SL3000 and SL8500 libraries that are in Legacy or LDI mode we will need to force the drive into LDI mode.

Note:  For customers that already have their libraries in ADI mode for STA you will not need to change anything on the LTO8 drive because the drive is already in ADI mode.

To change the drive from ADI to LDI please follow the below process:

  1. Take the drive tray out of the library and place it gently upside down on a flat surface.
  2. Look for the opening in the bottom of the drive tray which gives you access to the dip switch panel on the bottom of the drive.
  3. Flip the dip switch #5 to the off position (please see image below)
  4. Install the drive back into the library.
  5. Wait for the drive to power up and verify that the library sees the drive and has configured the WWNs and has enabled the FC Ports on the drive.

Here is an image showing the dip switch panel on the bottom of the drive in LDI mode:

Note:  Drives that are being installed into a SL4000 library don't need anything to be done with them since the SL4000 only communicates to the drives in ADI mode.
