Goal

This document provides you the procedure and steps to upgrade the system firmware on SPARC T5xx0, T3-x, T4-x, T5-x, T7-x and S7-2 servers.

Solution

Before you begin

Review these cautions and guidelines when updating the firmware.

1. Verify that the managed server service processor has network connectivity to update the firmware image.

2. Download the firmware patch for the upgradable device from the Oracle product download web site and then place the image on a local or network share or on a TFTP, FTP, HTTP or HTTPS server.

3. Obtain an Oracle ILOM user name and password that has Admin (a) role account privileges. You must have Admin (a) privileges to update the firmware image.

4. Notify SP users of the scheduled firmware update and ask them to close all client sessions until after the firmware update is complete.

5. Shut down your host operating system before proceeding. ILOM attempts to shut down the OS gracefully. If a graceful shutdown is not possible, ILOM forces a shutdown, which could cause filesystem corruption.

6. ILOM enters a special mode to load new firmware. No other tasks can be performed in ILOM until the firmware upgrade is complete and the ILOM is reset. To ensure a successful update, do not attempt to modify the ILOM configuration, or use other ILOM Web, CLI, SNMP, or IPMI interfaces, during the flash update process.

The firmware patch can be downloaded using one of the following options:

a. click on below link and then select the appropriate server

https://www.oracle.com/technetwork/systems/patches/firmware/release-history-jsp-138416.html

b. click on handbook https://support.oracle.com/handbook_private/Systems/eolSystemList.html select the appropriate server and then click on Patch Readmes and Downloads

For T7-x and S7-2 servers, please click on

https://support.oracle.com/handbook_private/Systems/index.html

The firmware update can be performed via Web or CLI

Update firmware via web

1.From System Information tab click on > Summary and then click on Update (right side of System Firmware Update)

From ILOM Administration tab > click on Maintenance and then > Firmware Update.

2. Click the button for Enter Update Mode, then click OK in the upgrade confirmation dialog box to proceed.

The Firmware Upgrade page displays the property for uploading the firmware image.

3. In the Firmware Update page, perform one the following actions:

Click Browse to specify the firmware image to upload, then click the Upload button.

- or -

Input a URL to upload the firmware image, then click the Upload button.

Oracle ILOM validates the firmware image and then displays options in the Firmware Verification page.

4. In the Firmware Verification page, enable the applicable options:

Preserve Configuration – Enable this option to save and restore the existing Oracle ILOM firmware settings after the firmware update is complete.

5. Click Start to start the update process.

6. Click OK to proceed through a series of prompts until the Update Status page appears.

7. The system will either reboot or power-off when the Update Status indicates 100%.

If your system powers off, refer to the documentation provided with your system for instructions on how to power on the system.

If the ILOM gets hung and you can't access it, please try to reset the service processor or perform an AC power cycle - Doc ID 2002931.1

Update firmware via CLI

1. To load the Oracle ILOM firmware image using the CLI, issue the load -source command followed by the path to locate the firmware image you want to install.

For example:

load -source protocol://username:password@server_ip/<path_to_image>/<image.pkg>

Where the protocol can be: http, https, ftp, tftp, sftp, scp

A series of prompts appear.

2. Type y to load the image file, then type y to enable the applicable options:

Preserve Configuration – Enable this option to save and restore the existing Oracle ILOM firmware settings after the firmware update is complete. For further details about this option, see Preserve Oracle ILOM Configuration .

Note. All firmware update options presented for your server are enabled (y) by default when using a script (-script) to perform the firmware update.

3. Oracle ILOM displays a status message when the firmware process is complete. The system will either reboot or power-off to apply the new firmware image.

If the system powers off, refer to the documentation provided with your system for instructions on how to power on the system.

If the ILOM gets hung and you can't access it, please try to reset the service processor or perform an AC power cycle - Doc ID 2002931.1)

To verify that the updated firmware version is installed, perform one of the following:

Web:
Log in to Oracle ILOM and click on System Information > Firmware to view the firmware version installed.

Note - The Oracle ILOM web interface might not refresh properly after a firmware update. If the Oracle ILOM web page is missing information or displays an error message, you might be viewing a cached version of the page from the previous version. Clear the browser cache and refresh the browser before continuing.

CLI:
Type: -> show /HOST
