Left VLX cards
1. VLX Card #1 controls CAP boxes 1 and 2
2. VLX Card #2 controls CAP boxes 3 and 4

Right VLX Cards
1. VLX Card #3 controls CAP boxes 5 and 6
2. VLX Card #4 controls CAP boxes 7 and 8

Goal

 To successfully replace a defective VLX card in the SL8500 Tape Library

Solution

DISPATCH INSTRUCTIONS
- WHAT SKILLS ARE REQUIRED?: CSE must be familiar with the SL8500 library.
- TIME ESTIMATE:  60 minutes
- TASK COMPLEXITY:  2
REMOVAL/REPLACEMENT INSTRUCTIONS:
- PROBLEM OVERVIEW: The VLX card has been determined to be defective and requires replacement.
- WHAT STATE SHOULD THE SYSTEM BE IN TO BE READY TO PERFORM THE RESOLUTION ACTIVITY?:  The library can be online.
- WHAT ACTIONS ARE REQUIRED?:

To remove the VLX Card:

1. Issue the following CLI command to disable the appropriate VLX card:   capCommand <enable|disable> <device address>

2. Engage the SSD (Service Safety Door) on the correct side of the defective card.

3. Verify that the "OK to Remove" LED #5 is lit.  See the following LED location and Identification listings below

4. Disconnect the following cables for the appropriate card you are replacing:
    a. Left VLX #1: P661-1,P662-1, P667-1
    b. Left VLX #2: P661-2, P662-2, P667-2
    c. Right VLX #3: P661-3, P662-3, P667-3
    d. Right VLX #4: P661-4, P662-4, P667-4

5. For the left VLX cards:
    a. VLX #1 - Remove the three screws and note the position of the ID screw
    b. VLX #2 - Remove the three screws and note the position of the ID screw

6. For the right VLX cards:
    a. VLX #4 - Remove the three screws and note the position of the ID screw
    b. VLX #3 - Remove the three screws and note the position of the ID screw

7. Place the card into an ESD envelope.


To replace a VLX card:
1. Remove the replacement VLX card from its ESD-protective bag.
2. Orient the card to place the reset button towards the front of the library.
3. Replace the four screws for the corners of the card
4. Connect the following cables for the appropriate card that you are replacing:
    a. Left VLX #1: P661-1,P662-1, P667-1
    b. Left VLX #2: P661-2, P662-2, P667-2
    c. Right VLX #3: P661-3, P662-3, P667-3
    d. Right VLX #4: P661-4, P662-4, P667-4
5. Verify that the following LEDs are lit for the replaced card ... LEDs 1 through 3, 6 through 10, and 13.
6. Close the front door.
7. Actuate the service safety door to its center position.
8. Proceed to “VLX Card Verification”

- WHAT ACTIONS ARE REQUIRED TO RETURN THE SYSTEM TO AN OPERATIONAL STATE?:

VLX Card Verification:
1. Run tests for the replaced VLX card.
2. Logon to the library using StorageTek Library Console.
3. Verify that all CAP locations display correct status in the System Detail screen.
