Goal

 Update the Hard Disk Firmware on a single disk rpool

Solution

 You will need to boot off alternate media to accomplish the task.

1) Boot off cdrom or net (follow the document below)

How to Mount the ZFS Root Pool (rpool) While Booted from CDrom / DVD Media or Network (Doc ID 1020186.1)

2) Copy over the Firmware Patch to the /tmp directory.

How to Find Sun Hardware Disk Drive Firmware Patch in MOS (Doc ID 1294589.1)

3) Install the Hard Disk Firmware as per the README in the patch.

4) When finished, export the root pool.

# cd /
# zpool export rpool
# zpool list
no pools available

5) Install the Firmware patch

6) Reboot

 

Symptoms

If you try to accomplish this while booted from single user mode or failsafe you can get the error:

Open failed, you must be the sole user!

 

 

Changes

 

 

 

Cause

The Hard Disk Drive must not be in use to update the FW.
