Solution
CAP PROBLEM OVERVIEW: Fan Module Replacement
DISPATCH INSTRUCTIONS
WHAT SKILLS DOES THE ENGINEER NEED:
Exalogic X6 Training
TIME ESTIMATE: 30 minutes
TASK COMPLEXITY: 1-FRU
FIELD ENGINEER INSTRUCTIONS
WHAT STATE SHOULD THE SYSTEM BE IN TO BE READY TO PERFORM THE RESOLUTION ACTIVITY? :
The server's fan modules support replacement while the server is running. However to maintain adequate airflow to properly cool the server the top cover fan assembly door can only be left open for 60 seconds. Leaving the door open for more than 60 seconds, while the server is running, might cause the server to overheat and shut down.
WHAT ACTION DOES THE ENGINEER NEED TO TAKE:
Remove a Fan Module:

A. Prepare the server for service.
-
Extend the server to the maintenance position in the rack.
- Attach an anti-static wrist strap.
-
To access the fan modules, open the server fan door.
B. Confirm the fan module failure and it's location.
-
Confirm which fan module is to be replaced. Each fan module has a status indicator (LED). If the LED is lit amber, the fan has failed. The status LEDs are located on the chassis mid-wall adjacent to and aligned with the fan module.
Caution - Close the server fan door within 60 seconds to maintain adequate airflow to properly cool the server. Leaving the door open for more than 60 seconds, while the server is running, might cause the server to overheat and shut down.
C. Remove the faulty fan module.
-
Using your thumb and forefinger, grasp the fan module in the finger recesses located in the plastic between the fans.
-
Lift the fan module straight up and out of the chassis, and set it aside on an antistatic mat.
Caution - When removing a fan module please note that the system will shutdown the server if a fan module is not reinserted within the 20 second timeout. The fans are N+1 redundant so only one of the 16 fan motors can be failed at one time otherwise this will also shutdown the server.
Caution - When removing a fan module, do not rock it back and forth. Rocking the fan module can cause damage to the motherboard connectors.
D. Install the replacement fan module.
-
Remove the replacement fan module from its packaging and place it on an antistatic mat. This should have been done before starting the replacement procedure so the fan is ready to install when the failed fan is removed.
-
With the top cover fan assembly door open, install the replacement fan module into the server. The fan modules are keyed to ensure that they are installed in the correct orientation.
-
Press down on the fan module and apply firm pressure to fully seat the fan module.
-
Verify that the Fan status LED that aligns with the replaced fan is off.
- Close the fan door.
-
Verify that the Top Fan LED on the front of the server and the Service Required LEDs on the front and rear of the server are extinguished.
E. Return the Server to operation.
-
Return the server to it's normal operating position within the rack.
-
Check all power and data cables to ensure that no connections were disturbed during the service.
-
Verify that the Power/OK indicator led lights steady on and that system is operating properly.
