 How to Replace an Oracle Server X7-2 Coin Cell Battery.

WHAT SKILLS DOES THE FIELD ENGINEER/ADMINISTRATOR NEED?:
No special skills required, Customer Replaceable Unit (CRU) procedure

FIELD ENGINEER/ADMINISTRATOR INSTRUCTIONS:

PROBLEM OVERVIEW: An Oracle Server X7-2 Coin Cell Battery needs replacement

WHAT STATE SHOULD THE SYSTEM BE IN TO BE READY TO PERFORM THE RESOLUTION ACTIVITY? :

If the system is still up and functioning, customer should perform an orderly and graceful shutdown of applications and OS.  Then power off the server and remove the AC power cords from the system.

A data backup is not a prerequisite but is a wise precaution.

WHAT ACTION DOES THE ENGINEER NEED TO TAKE:

The battery maintains system time when the server is powered off and a time server is unavailable. If the server fails to maintain the proper time when the server is powered off and not connected to a network, replace the battery.

Removing the Coin Cell Battery:

1. Extend the server to the maintenance position
2. Power off the server and disconnect the power cords from the power supplies.
3. Attach an antistatic wrist strap to your wrist and then to a metal area on the chassis.
4. Remove the server top cover.
5. The battery is located in a retainer directly behind the PCIe slot 1 riser. To dislodge the battery from its retainer, gently push the top edge of the battery away from the retainer. Then gently lift the battery up and out of the retainer.

Installing the Coin Cell Battery:

1. Unpack the replacement battery.
2. Press the new battery into the battery retainer so that the + positive side faces the plastic of the retainer and the - negative side is making contact with the metal clip.

Return the server to operation:

1. Install the server top cover.
2. Return the server to the normal rack position.
3. Reconnect the power cord to the server power supply and connect any other cables to their original locations.
4. Power on the server.
5. Verify that the Power/OK status indicator is steady on.
6. If the service processor is configured to synchronize with a network time server using the Network Time Protocol (NTP), the Oracle ILOM clock will be reset as soon as the server is powered on and connected to the network; otherwise, proceed to the next step.
7. If the service processor is not configured to use NTP, do one of the following:
   1. Reset the Oracle ILOM clock using the Oracle ILOM CLI or the web interface.
      1. Update the time and date via CLI:
         1. Once the ILOM is booted all the way login.
         2. cd to the /SP/clock directory.
         3. Using the set command set the time and date:
            -> show

            /SP/clock
            Targets:

            Properties:
            datetime = Tue Sep 19 19:37:03 2017
            timezone = GMT (GMT)
            uptime = 5 days, 03:34:19
            usentpserver = disabled

            Commands:
            cd
            set
            show

            -> set datetime=091915342017
            Set 'datetime' to '091915342017' [Tue Sep 19 15:34:00 2017]
            

            ->

      2. Update the time and date via web interface:
         1. Click on ILOM Administration on the left panel.
         2. Click on Date and Time on the left panel.
         3. Then set the date and time on the Clock tab screen.
         4. When finished hit the save button.

OBTAIN CUSTOMER ACCEPTANCE

WHAT ACTION DOES THE CUSTOMER NEED TO TAKE TO RETURN THE SYSTEM TO AN OPERATIONAL STATE:

Boot up system and verify full functionality.
