Goal

 Procedure on how to reset password in 3900 SBC using diagnostic image.

Solution

Please ensure you have collected the following before resetting the password using diags. This is because, once you confirm yes (in step 4); the bootparams and license will be erased from the SBC:

a. bootparams details
b. License features {use show entitlements}
c. Always connect via console to the sbc

As of now, only the enterprise software versions are available for 3900. So, the testing has been done currently using ECZ740p3.bz, ECZ740p4.bz, ECZ750.bz

1. Download the diagnostics image (for example nnCZb_diags07) from MOS. Then upload this diag image to the following location: /boot/diags/

2. Set the 'Boot File' to /boot/diags/nnCZb_diags07.
***Always keep note of the existing bootparams before changing it***

SBC-3900-2# conf t
SBC-3900-2(configure)# bootparam

'.' = clear field; '-' = go to previous field; q = quit

Boot File : /boot/nnECZ750.bz /boot/diags/nnCZb_diags07 <<==============
IP Address : 10.20.10.20
VLAN :
Netmask : 255.255.255.0
Gateway : 10.20.10.1
IPv6 Address :

NOTE: These changed parameters will not go into effect until reboot.
Also, be aware that some boot parameters may also be changed through
PHY and Network Interface Configurations.

SBC-3900-2(configure)#
SBC-3900-2(configure)# exit
SBC-3900-2#
SBC-3900-2# reboot

WARNING: you are about to reboot this ESBC!

Reboot this ESBC [y/n]?: y

3. Then reboot the SBC with diags image and it will enter diags mode:
Example:

diag_fld >

4. Type 'password reset' and then confirm 'y'.

*** Please note: on confirming yes; bootparams and license will be erased from the SBC

Example:

diag_fld > password reset

Password reset message

5. Then type 'reboot' to reboot the sbc.

diag_fld > reboot
Sent SIGKILL to all processesyst
Requesting system reboot
Restarting system.

6. Interrupt the boot sequence by pressing 'space' key when it prompts on the console. Then change the 'boot file' back to the software image (in this case /boot/nnECZ740p3.bz). Once the bootparams are set, then type '@' and press 'enter' to continue

Starting acmeboot...

8. Please login with the default user password i.e. acme and for the superuser password i.e. packet. At this point, you will be allowed to set a new password and confirm by re-entering that new password.

9. Set the license by self-entitlement i.e. 'setup product' and 'setup entitlements'

10. As a good practice, always store a working backup-config, license details, support-info (output of show support-info config) on your local system. Please maintain this on a frequent basis.
