ESD Caution:
- Circuit boards and drives contain electronic components that are extremely sensitive to static electricity. Ordinary amounts of static electricity from clothing or the work environment can destroy the components located on these boards. Do not touch the components along their connector edges.
- Use a Antistatic Wrist strap. Attach one end of the strap to your wrist and the other end to the chassis, depending on what type of strap you use, with the adhesive end or the metal plug.
- Use an Antistatic Mat. Place ESD-sensitive components such as motherboards, memory, and other PCBs on an antistatic mat.
Contamination Caution:
- Dust particles of packaging material are number one cause of datacenter contamination. Make sure to remove all packaging material, up to the ESD safe packaging material, while still being outside the datacenter.

WHAT STATE SHOULD THE SYSTEM BE IN TO BE READY TO PERFORM THE RESOLUTION ACTIVITY? :
Note:
- This is a hot service procedure that can be performed by Customers while the server is running.
- The drive must be taken offline before it is removed. If it cannot be taken offline, the OS must be shut down to prevent running programs from attempting to use it.
- The "cfgadm" commands in this document (and in the Service manual) are for individual drives that are not part of RAID volumes. When a drive is part of a RAID volume, you do not need to unconfigure it before swapping it with a new drive. When replacing a failed drive in a hardware RAID volume, follow the SPARC T8 RAID Drive Replacement Strategies.
WHAT ACTIONS ARE REQUIRED?:
Damage Alert:
Perform a visual inspection of the replacement part to make sure that there are no damaged components, connectors, bent pins, damaged packages during shipping, etc. If the part is damaged, don't install it into the system, order a new part. Handle with caution and package carefully the return part to avoid any damages during shipping.

Address mapping between the Oracle Solaris OS device paths and physical hard drive slots is not fixed. For many storage administration tasks, the mapping of OS device names to physical hard drive slots must be determined before the task can be performed. See the SPARC T8 series servers administration guide for information on mapping SAS controller ports to physical drive slots.
Note:
- The server requires at least one hard drive to be installed and operational.
- This is a hot service procedure that can be performed by Customers while the server is running.
Caution:
- The drive must be taken offline before it is removed. If it cannot be taken offline, the OS must be shut down to prevent running programs from attempting to use it.
Determine if you need to shut down the OS to replace the drive, and perform one of the following actions:
1. If the drive cannot be taken offline without shutting down the OS, you'll have to power down the system before taking the drive offline.
2. If the drive can be taken offline without shutting down the OS, take the drive offline following this procedure:

- At the Oracle Solaris prompt, type the "cfgadm -al" command to list all drives in the device tree, including drives that are not configured.
- Select the drive that you want to remove. Unconfigure the drive using the "cfgadm -c unconfigure" command.
- Verify that the drives blue Ready-to-Remove LED is lit.
* Press the drive release button to unlock the drive and pull on the latch to remove the drive.
* Install the replacement drive or a filler tray.
* With the latch open on the replacement drive, align insert the drive into the drive bay and slide it forward until it is seated.
* Close the latch to lock the drive in place.
* Bring the drive online.
* Configure the drive using the cfgadm -c configure command.
* Verify the drive.
OBTAIN CUSTOMER ACCEPTANCE
WHAT ACTIONS ARE REQUIRED TO RETURN THE SYSTEM TO AN OPERATIONAL STATE?:
Verify functionality, no service LEDs or error messages. Reconfigure disk as previously configured. e.g. Part of raid volume set or mounted file-system or raw partition or other. Restart software applications per applicable administration guides to resume system operation.
