ESD Caution:

  • Circuit boards and drives contain electronic components that are extremely sensitive to static electricity. Ordinary amounts of static electricity from clothing or the work environment can destroy the components located on these boards. Do not touch the components along their connector edges.
  • Use a Antistatic Wrist strap. Attach one end of the strap to your wrist and the other end to the chassis, depending on what type of strap you use, with the adhesive end or the metal plug.
  • Use an Antistatic Mat. Place ESD-sensitive components such as motherboards, memory, and other PCBs on an antistatic mat.

Contamination Caution:

  • Dust particles of packaging material are number one cause of datacenter contamination. Make sure to remove all packaging material, up to the ESD safe packaging material, while still being outside the datacenter.

DISPATCH INSTRUCTIONS

WHAT SKILLS ARE REQUIRED?: SPARC T8-2 Product Training required, to be serviced by qualified Oracle Service personnel, requires the ability to follow steps similar to what is in the Product Service manual.

Time Estimate: 60 minutes

Task Complexity: 1

REMOVAL/REPLACEMENT INSTRUCTIONS:

PROBLEM OVERVIEW: SPARC T8-2 Fan Cage Assembly (Fan Board with USB & VGA and LED Flex Circuit) Replacement

WHAT STATE SHOULD THE SYSTEM BE IN TO BE READY TO PERFORM THE RESOLUTION ACTIVITY? :

Note:
  • A data backup is not a prerequisite but is a wise precaution.
  • If the system is still up and functioning, the Customer should perform an orderly and graceful shutdown of the applications and operating system.
  • Then power off the server and remove the AC power cords from the system. For ALL scenarios where an AC power down or AC power cycle is required for a T8-x server, please always use the steps in doc 1571054.1 prior to physically removing AC power cables from the server.

WHAT ACTIONS ARE REQUIRED?:

Damage Alert:
  • Perform a visual inspection of the replacement part to make sure that there are no damaged components, connectors, bent pins, damaged packages during shipping, etc. If the part is damaged, don't install it into the system, order a new part. Handle with caution and package carefully the return part to avoid any damages during shipping.

Removing the Fan Cage Assembly (Fan Board with USB & VGA and LED Flex Circuit)

    a. Power off the server and disconnect the power cords from the power supplies.
    b. Extend the server to the maintenance position in the rack.
    c. Attach an anti-static wrist strap.

2. Remove all fan modules.

3. Remove all memory risers.

4. Disconnect any cables plugged into the USB or video connectors on the front of the server.

5. Remove the fan board by completing the following tasks:

    a. Loosen the three captive screws connecting the front memory riser guide to the motherboard.
    b. Remove the two screws on each side of the outside of the chassis that hold the fan board in place and unplug the fan board and power cables from motherboard.
    c. Remove the front memory riser guide by pulling it up and out of the chassis.
    d. Remove the air baffle by pulling it up and out of the chassis.
    e. Pull the fan board back and out of chassis (The circuit board and the fan holder portions of the fan board should remain together).

Installing the Fan Cage Assembly (Fan Board with USB & VGA and LED Flex Circuit)

1. Unpack the replacement fan board unit and place it on an antistatic mat.

2. Remove the fan board cable and power cables from the faulty fan board and plug the cables into the fan board on the replacement fan board unit.

3. Reinstall the fan board unit by completing the following tasks:

    a. Insert the fan board into the chassis, moving it down and toward the front.
    b. Insert the air baffle, aligning the cutouts in the bottom of the air baffle with the three captive screw holes in the chassis.
    c. Reposition the front memory riser guide, routing the fan board and power cable through the riser guide.
    d. Plug the fan board cable and power cable into the connectors on the motherboard.
    e. Secure the fan board by reinserting and tightening the two screws on each side of the outside of the chassis.
    f. Tighten the three captive screws to hold the front memory riser guide in place.

4. Reinstall all fan modules.

5. Reinstall all memory risers.

6. Return the server to operation:

    a. Install the top cover.

    b. Return the server to the normal rack position.

Refer to doc 1280913.1 for the procedure to update the product serial number.

Verify the Fan Cage Assembly (Fan Board with USB & VGA and LED Flex Circuit)

At the Oracle ILOM prompt, start the fault management shell.
-> start /SP/faultmgmt/shell
Are you sure you want to start /SP/faultmgmt/shell (y/n)? y

faultmgmtsp>
Type fmadm faulty to check for faults.
If faults are reported, see Detecting and Managing Faults .

If no faults are reported, then the fan board has been replaced successfully.

OBTAIN CUSTOMER ACCEPTANCE

WHAT ACTION DOES THE FE/ADMINISTRATOR NEED TO TAKE TO RETURN THE SYSTEM TO AN OPERATIONAL STATE:

Boot system and monitor boot sequence for errors. Test functionality of system:

  1. Run the Solaris "fmadm faulty" and SP/ILOM "show faulty" command to verify that the fault has been cleared.
  2. Perform one of the following tasks based on your verification results.
    • If the previous steps did not clear the fault, refer to doc 1004229.1 for information about the tools and methods you can use to diagnose and clear component faults.
    • If the previous steps indicate that no faults have been detected, the component has been replaced successfully. No further action is required
  3. Restart software applications per applicable administration guides to resume system operation.
