ESD Caution:

  • Circuit boards and drives contain electronic components that are extremely sensitive to static electricity. Ordinary amounts of static electricity from clothing or the work environment can destroy the components located on these boards. Do not touch the components along their connector edges.
  • Use a Antistatic Wrist strap. Attach one end of the strap to your wrist and the other end to the chassis, depending on what type of strap you use, with the adhesive end or the metal plug.
  • Use an Antistatic Mat. Place ESD-sensitive components such as motherboards, memory, and other PCBs on an antistatic mat.

Contamination Caution:

  • Dust particles of packaging material are number one cause of datacenter contamination. Make sure to remove all packaging material, up to the ESD safe packaging material, while still being outside the datacenter.

DISPATCH INSTRUCTIONS

WHAT SKILLS ARE REQUIRED?:  No special skills required, Customer Replaceable Unit (CRU) procedure

Time Estimate: 30 minutes

Task Complexity: 0

REMOVAL/REPLACEMENT INSTRUCTIONS:

PROBLEM OVERVIEW: SPARC T8-2 Fan Module Replacement

WHAT STATE SHOULD THE SYSTEM BE IN TO BE READY TO PERFORM THE RESOLUTION ACTIVITY? :

Note:

  • This is a hot service procedure that can be performed by Customers while the server is running.

WHAT ACTIONS ARE REQUIRED?:

Damage Alert:
  • Perform a visual inspection of the replacement part to make sure that there are no damaged components, connectors, bent pins, damaged packages during shipping, etc. If the part is damaged, don't install it into the system, order a new part. Handle with caution and package carefully the return part to avoid any damages during shipping.
Note:
  • The fan modules in the server are located at the front of the chassis. You can access them without removing the server cover. You might need to extend the server from the rack to access the fan modules. Each fan module contains two counter-rotating fans that are mounted in an integrated, hot-serviceable component.
Caution:
  • While the fan modules provide some cooling redundancy, if a fan module fails, replace it as soon as possible to maintain server availability. When removing a fan module please note that the system will shutdown the server if a fan module is not reinserted within the 30 second timeout. The fans are N+1 redundant so only one of the fans modules can be failed at one time otherwise this will also shutdown the server.

Locate a Faulty Fan Module

View the following LEDs, which are lit when a fan module fault is detected:

- Service Action Required LEDs on the front and rear panels.
- Fan Module (FAN) Fault LED on the front of the server.
- Fan Status LED on or adjacent to the faulty fan module. Each fan module contains an LED. When the associated Green LED is not lit, a fault has occurred on that fan module.

Note:
  • The front and rear panel Service Action Required LEDs are also lit when the system detects a fan module fault. The system Overtemp LED might also light if a fan fault causes an increase in system operating temperature.

Removing a Fan Module

This procedure can be performed by customers while the server is running.

Caution:
  • While the fan modules provide some cooling redundancy, if a fan module fails, replace it as soon as possible to maintain server availability. When you remove one of the fan modules, you must replace it within 30 seconds to prevent overheating of the server.
  • The fan module contains hazardous moving parts. Unless the power to the server is completely shut down, replacing the fan modules is the only service permitted in the fan compartment.

1. Attach an antistatic wrist strap.

2. Extend the server to the maintenance position.

3. Identify the faulty fan module with a corresponding Green Status LED not lit.

4. Using your thumb and forefinger, grasp the handle on the fan module and lift it out of the server.

Caution:
  • When removing a fan module, do not rock it back and forth. Rocking fan modules can cause damage to the fan board connectors.
  • When changing fan modules, note that only the fan modules can be removed or replaced. Do not service any other components in the fan compartment unless the system is shut down and the power cords are removed.

Install a Fan Module

1. Unpack the replacement fan module and place it on an antistatic mat.

2. Install the replacement fan module into the server by completing the following tasks:

    a. Align the fan module and slide it into the fan slot.

Note:
  • Fan modules are keyed to ensure they are installed in the correct orientation.

    b. Apply firm pressure to fully seat the fan module (You will hear a click when the fan is properly seated).
    c. Verify that the Green Status LED on the replaced fan module is lit.

3. Return the Server to operation.

    a. Return the server to it's normal operating position within the rack.
    b. Check all power and data cables to ensure that no connections were disturbed during the service.
    c. Verify that the Power/OK indicator led lights steady on and that system is operating properly.

How to verify the Fan Module is working properly

1. Log into ILOM to check Fan Module status.

Example:

-> show /SYS/MB/FMx
/SYS/MB/FMx
Targets:
F0
F1
SERVICE
VPS

Properties:
type = Front Fan
fault_state = OK
clear_fault_action = (none)

Commands:
cd
set
show

->

2. Check ILOM event log to see if there are any errors related to the fans.

-> show /SP/faultmgmt
-> show /SP/logs/event/list
