Goal

When to potentially use deduplication with replication

Solution

Replication with deduplication can be potentially used in a couple situations.

1.  When the data is not encrypted

For when the data is not encrypted, the checksum needs to be set to sha256, or the dedup needs to be enabled for the share or LUN when the data was stored to disk.

pool1/local/myproject checksum sha256-mac local

2.  When the data is encrypted

For when the data is encrypted, the encryption mode needs to be set to one of the CCM values (AES-128-CCM, AES-192-CCM, AES-256-CCM) (not GCM), and dedup enabled for the share or LUN when the data was stored.

pool1/local/myproject encryption aes-256-ccm local

pool1/local/myproject dedup on local

If this is not the case, replication should work but can be slower.
