HOWTO - What To Do If Brocade 300 FC Switch Needs To Be Replaced [VCAP]

Solution

DISPATCH INSTRUCTIONS

- WHAT SKILLS DOES THE FIELD ENGINEER/ADMINISTRATOR NEED?:

If Admin can log onto the switch:

- do a switch configuration back up per following public document

<Document 1016713.1> Brocade - How to save a switch configuration off to a file

- then do a graceful shutdown of the switch

- then power off switch.

Otherwise, just power off the switch.

- TIME ESTIMATE:

1 hour (outside of any switch configuration back up)

- TASK COMPLEXITY:

1 - low complexity product, process knowledge required

FIELD ENGINEER/ADMINISTRATOR INSTRUCTIONS:

- PROBLEM OVERVIEW:

Brocade 300 FC Switch needs to be replaced.

- WHAT STATE SHOULD THE SYSTEM BE IN TO BE READY TO PERFORM THE RESOLUTION ACTIVITY?:

Switch should be powered off.

- WHAT ACTION DOES THE FIELD ENGINEER/ADMINISTRATOR NEED TO TAKE?:

Before Oracle Tech is onsite the tech should:

Provide replacement switch wwn/serial numbers to the Oracle support engineer that owns the Oracle SR so he can start process to transfer any licenses in order to get the switch in full operation as quickly as possible. Assuming defective switch wwn/serial number is known by Oracle support engineer already. If not then all the information can be provided once onsite.

Oracle support engineer that owns the Oracle SR will need to transfer any existing licenses from old, defective switch to the new replacement switch, see doc:

<Document 1005030.1> How to Perform a Brocade Switch License Transfer

In the front of the switch there is a pull out tab with wwn/serial number info.

Pull-out tab located inside the chassis on the port side on the left.

Oracle Tech also should review following internal document in order to identify correct Sun/Oracle serial number.

<Document 1947447.1> Verifying Entitlement on Brocade Fibre Channel (FC) Switch Service Request (SR)

Once Oracle Tech is onsite with replacement switch:

1. Label cables and make note of connections

2. Disconnect cables

3. If rack mounted, remove defective switch from cabinet.

4. Remove rack mount rails from switch

Note: Locate on switches and provide defective and replacement switch wwn/serial numbers to the Oracle support engineer that owns the Oracle SR so he can start process to transfer any licenses in order to get the switch in full operation as quickly as possible.

5. Install rack mount rails on replacement switch

6. Install switch in rack.

7. Move SFPs from the defective switch to the replacement switch

8. Reconnect cables.

9. Power on switch.

10. Verify good status LEDs and fans operation.

OBTAIN CUSTOMER ACCEPTANCE

- WHAT ACTION DOES THE FIELD ENGINEER/ADMINISTRATOR NEED TO TAKE TO RETURN THE SYSTEM TO AN OPERATIONAL STATE?:

Oracle Tech and/or Customer Admin

Provide Power to the Switch

1. Connect the power cord to the switch and then to a power source. Ensure that the cord has a minimum service loop of 6 in. available and are routed to avoid stress.

2. The power supply LED display amber until POST is complete, and then change to green. The switch usually requires
from 1 to 3 min to boot and complete POST.

3. After POST is complete, verify that the switch power and status LED on the left of the port side of the switch are green.

If it is a StandAlone Switch then steps below will need to preformed and configuration updated manually or by uploading backup configyration.

If the switch part of a existing fabric configuration will be auto-imported from fabric.

Create a Serial Connection

1. Remove the plug from the serial port and insert the serial cable provided with the switch.

2. Connect the serial cable to the serial port on the switch and to an RS-232 serial port on the workstation. If the serial port on the workstation is RJ-45 instead of RS-232, you can remove the adapter on the end of the serial cable and insert the exposed RJ-45 connector into the RJ-45 serial port on the workstation.

3. Disable any serial communication programs running on the workstation.

4. Open a terminal emulator application (such as HyperTerminal for Windows or TERM in a UNIX environment) and configure the application as follows:

• In a Windows NT, 2000, 2003, ME, or XP environment:
Bits per second: 9600
Databits: 8
Parity: None
Stop bits: 1
Flow control: None

• In a UNIX environment, enter the following command at the prompt:
Connect to the Switch Using the Serial Connection
To log in to the switch through the serial connection:
1. Verify that the switch has completed POST. When POST is complete, the port status and switch
power and status LEDs return to a standard healthy state (green).
2. When the terminal emulator application stops reporting information, press Enter to display the
login prompt.

Set the Switch IP Address
To replace the default IP address and related information:
1. Enter the ipAddrSet command at the terminal emulator application prompt, and enter the requested
information at the prompts:
2. Optionally, verify that the address was correctly set by entering the ipAddrShow command at the
prompt.
3. Record the IP address on the pull out tab provided for this purpose on the port side of the switch.
4. If the serial port is no longer required, log out of the serial console, remove the serial cable, and
replace the plug in the serial port.

Create an Ethernet Connection
To create an Ethernet connection to the switch:
1. Remove the plug from the Ethernet port.
2. Connect an Ethernet cable to the switch Ethernet port and to the workstation or to an Ethernet
network containing the workstation.

Set the Switch Domain ID
To set the switch domain ID:
1. Log on to the switch by telnet, using the admin account.
2. Modify the domain ID ---if required---.
The default domain ID is 1. If the switch is not powered on until after it is connected to the fabric
and the default domain ID is already in use, the domain ID for the new switch is automatically reset
to a unique value. If the switch is connected to the fabric after is has been powered on and the
default domain ID is already in use, the fabric segments. To find the domain IDs that are currently
in use, run the fabricShow command on another switch in the fabric.

Oracle Tech Only

Update Installed Base:

Update Installed Base, to ensure that the replacement-part serial# will be properly entitled. Within Oracle, the Switch is termed a "SuperFRU" which simply means that it is a whole chassis replacement including both chassis and internal main-board.

The Oracle FE should follow the process below to create a MyHelp ticket to update the Install Base.

After Task debrief, create a MyHelp ticket for Install Base update:

§ Login to MyHelp, Reference link here

§ Select Install Base - Hardware - Guide

§ Select Update, then Serial Number Correction

§ Submit Ticket

§ Provide the following required information in the ticket:

- Subject: Need IB update for Brocade PN 7056038

- Description:

- Serial number of component being replaced: xxx

- Was this part returned to Oracle or scrapped?

- Serial number of component that was installed: xxx

§ Attach documents if any (serial number photos, etc.)

§ Click Submit

PARTS NOTE:

Part number: 7056038, Item Description: Brocade 300
