Sun StorageTek SL8500 Modular Library System - Version All Versions and later
Information in this document applies to any platform.

Goal

The Library used to be partitioned in the past with HLI1 dedicated to a Mainframe environment and HLI2 dedicated to an open system VTL environment. The Mainframe environment was decommissioned and the HLI1 partition deleted. The VTL HLI2 partition slot capacity was expanded to the whole library slot capacity and the library put back online in operations.

The HLI1 partition was removed but the library is still displayed as Host Interface Type: Partitioned HLI under the SLConsole "Status", "General" tab

Since customer is no longer needing partitioning on this library they are planing to change the library configuration to Non-Partitioned HLI.

While checking the library configuration on SLConsole under the "Status", "General" tab, a pop-up window was seen saying  "PARTITION DEFINITIONs ARE INVALID"

Solution

The "Invalid Partition Definition" pop up error comes from the fact the /hbc/configuration/PartitionConfiguration.xml file does not contain valid entries for a partitioned library with only one HLI2 partition configured.

There is a reference to the "Invalid Partition Definition" pop-up in SL8500 - Code Upgrade to 8.51 Partition File Problems, <Document 2185220.1>.
Selecting "Reset To Default" will change the library from "Partitioned hli" to "Non-Partitioned hli".

Or you can use the CLI instead of SLC, as recommended by Engineering, to revert library to non-partitioned.

partition setNonPartitionedHLI
Sets the partition to hli0.
WARNING: If there are any drives in the media validation pool,
they must be removed beforehand. See the mediaValidation
poolSetup command for more information.
If in complex, it sets all the libraries to hli0.

Now the /hbc/configuration/PartitionConfiguration.xml file is converted to what it should be for a default "Non-Partitioned hli" library.

The library should now display "Non-Partitioned hli" under the "Status", "General" tab

Then using SLC go to the Tools -> Select Active Cells screen.
. Press the "Apply Default Capacity" button.
 . Verify:
-SLC -> Library -> General Properties Active Cell count reflects the expected capacity of the library.
-SLC -> Library -> General Status Access State is online.
-If not, "Bring Online" via the "-select-transition" to bring the library online.

Note: On a Partitioned library the Select Active Cells menu is greyed (not accessible). A reboot may be needed after the "Reset To Default" to take the new "Non-Partitioned hli" state into account.

After this change is made the default partition in a Non-Partitioned library becomes hli0. This means that ACSLS needs to be reconfigured to access the library using hli0, instead of hli2.
