Goal

When trying to set up a replication target under configuration > Services> Replication

Why do I get the error message "Unable to connect to hostname: '  IP address'"  ?

The customer can ping the IP address of the target ZFS  from the source ZFS  though.

Solution

Replication needs to be set on the active node in and active/passive cluster.

If you try it from the passive or node with only management interface (active - no resources such as pools or data networks) it cannot find a route - even if ping can !
