Goal

How To get a Stranded Tape out of the Robotic Hand on an Oracle StorageTek SL24/SL48 Library

Solution

If you have a stranded or stuck tape in the robotic hand of the Oracle StorageTek SL24 or SL48 library please follow the below process to recover the tape out of the hand.

Note:  Before you try the below process please grab a Support log from the SL24/SL48 library from the Web GUI so that Oracle support can look into the cause of the stranded tape.  For instructions on how to get the Support log from the SL24/SL48 library please see the following Doc ID 1374571.1.

  1. Make sure the shipping lock is removed.
  2. Attempt to move the tape from your backup software.
  3. If the move from the backup software fails then shut down the backup software and if applicable stop the operating system's removable storage services.
  4. From the OCP (Local Front OP Panel) or RMI (Remote Web GUI), attempt to move the tape to a slot.
  5. If the move from the OCP or RMI fails then power down the unit, disconnect all cabling from the library/drive, power up the unit, and wait until the library is idle or ready. From the OCP, attempt to move the tape from the robotic to a slot. Power cycling and temporarily disconnecting the library from the host server eliminates the host and its software as a problem source.
  6. If manual movement via the OCP fails, power down the library and remove the power cord from the back. DO NOT remove the top cover, depending on where the robotic is located remove the left/ right magazines and perhaps the drives.
  7. If possible move the robotic to an easy to access location, for example at the front.
  8. Reaching thru the magazine openings, lift the tape cartridge vertically to separate from the robotic hand, remove the tape thru the magazine opening.
  9. Inspect the tape cartridge that was stuck. Damaged, loose or misplaced labels on the cartridge could have caused the movement failure. Discard any tape cartridge found to have physical issues.
  10. If a damaged tape appears to have caused the issue then connect all of the cables back to the library and bring it back online so that backup operations can be started again.
  11. If the tape was not found to be damaged then work with Oracle support to determine if this incident was a tape cartridge issue or a library issue.
