Goal

Do we really need ACSLS Server ? Can SL8500 function normally without ACSLS Server ?

Solution

ACSLS is needed to manage SL8500 tape operations in Unix environments. The SL8500 has no Fibre Channel interface for backup applications to directly communicate with.

If you have an SL3000, SL500 or SL150, you are not required to have ACSLS but you will have to configure your backup application to recognize a direct-attached library.
This will allow the backup application to directly control the tape library operations like mount/dismount/enter/eject tapes.
