Goal

This document provides support strategy information for replacing Private Cloud Appliance (PCA) ZFS Appliance Logzilla with Higher Capacity SSD.

Due to very limited availability of some older model Logzilla SSDs, a Logzilla with a Higher Capacity (200GB) may be provided to replace a lower capacity device.
The higher capacity Logzilla requires a minimum AK Firmware version of 2011.1.9.3 or 2013.1.4.1 for the ZFS Storage Appliance.

Updating your PCA software to the recommended release will help to expedite part replacements.

IMPORTANT NOTE:
If you are unable to upgrade to the recommended release, the replacement parts request (for a lower capacity device) will go on backorder with no known time of fulfillment.

Solution

For all versions of Private Cloud Appliance (PCA) and Oracle Virtual Cloud Appliance (OVCA) the minimum mandatory release is patch 22185511: Private Cloud Appliance release 2.1.1.
The 2.1.1 release contains the minimum AK firmware versions for the issue described above.

Below is the snippet from the Release 2.1.1 Administrators guide
  Section 2.8.1 Mandatory Updates
    Release 2.1.1

If your Oracle PCA is currently running Controller Software Release 2.0.5, you can upgrade to Release 2.1.1.
Critical changes include:

- new network customization and monitoring functionality
- firmware upgrades for network components
- automated ZFS storage appliance firmware upgrade, including network access to both controllers for easier maintenance
- support for compute node memory extension kits

INTERNAL NOTE TO SUPPORT

In PCA X3-2 we used the ZFS-7320

We never had 18gb drives in PCA so with PCA X-3 we were already at the minimum level to use 73gb drives.
To use the 200gb drives in the ZFS-7320 it needs minimum of ZFS 2013.1.2.9 which came installed in image 2.0.1, however 2.1.1. should be recommended per the 2.8.1 mandatory update mentioned in the release notes.

For PCA X-4 and X-5 we used ZS3-ES which released with PCA X-4 with image 1.1.1 and had zfs 2013.1.0.1

For the 200gb drives that might replace the 73gb drives we need to be at a minimum zfs 2013.1.4.1
In PCA image of 2.1.1 and beyond we upgrade the ZFS to 2013.1.4.2
In our release of PCA image 2.1.1 we updated the zfs to 2013.1.4.2

So the bottom line here is that to cover PCA for this drive size issue the recommendation would be to insure the PCA image is no older that 2.1.1, which fixes many other issues and no one should be running anything older
