Goal

Direction regarding how to replace a cluster interconnect link identified as failed.

Solution

Preparation

The cluster interconnect links of a ZFS Storage Appliance consist of an Ethernet and two serial connections.

The Ethernet port on one ZFS Storage Appliance connects to the Ethernet port on its peer.
The serial connections cross over:
e.g.:
Serial port 0 of one controller connects to serial port 1 of the other controller.

The cluster cables used for a ZS5-x are 2.5-meters in length.
For all other ZFS Storage Appliance systems the cluster cables or other controllers are 1-meter in length.

Oracle part numbers:
530-3771, Ethernet Cable, Category 5/5E, RJ45 to RJ45, 1m, Grey
7083458, Bootless Ethernet Cable, Category 5/5E, RJ45 to RJ45, 7-Foot, Green
7083459, Bootless Ethernet Cable, Category 5/5E, RJ45 to RJ45, 7-Foot, Yellow
7083460, Bootless Ethernet Cable, Category 5/5E, RJ45 to RJ45, 7-Foot, Black

If supplying your own Ethernet cables, ensure they are straight-through, Category 5 or better, and the correct length.

Before replacing a cluster interconnect cable either the state of the remaining links needs to be verified as healthy or one of the cluster peers should be powered off.

To verify the state of the cluster interconnect links, look in the Browser User Interface under:

Configuration : CLUSTER

An active line is indicated by a solid line.
An unhealthy link is indicated by a dashed line.

 Cluster Interconnects in the BUI

or from the appliance command line interface use the command 'configuration cluster links'

NAS:> configuration cluster links

clustron2:0/clustron_uart:0 = AKCIOS_TIMEDOUT
clustron2:0/clustron_uart:1 = AKCIOS_ACTIVE
clustron2:0/dlpi:0 = AKCIOS_ACTIVE

clustron_uart indicates a serial link and dlpi an Ethernet link.

Disconnecting the RJ-45 Cable from the Cluster interconnect Port

When disconnecting an RJ-45 cable from a cluster interconnect port, use extreme care not to damage the internal RJ-45 receptacle.
To properly remove an RJ-45 cable from a cluster serial port, do the following:

1. Using your index finger, press down fully on the RJ-45 release tab. Be sure the tab is fully disengaged from the port.

2. Using your thumb and middle finger, apply a slight downward pressure while pulling the plug out of the port. Do not pull the plug upward or pinch the release tab with your fingers below the plug.
