Goal

Configure network interfaces as a dedicated connections to each node of a ZFS Storage Appliance cluster system.

Solution

Symptoms

When a ZFS Storage Appliance is in the OWNER / STRIPPED (active/passive) state, if no dedicated management interface has been defined, no network access to the STRIPPED node will be available.

Changes

On initial configuration or reconfiguration of a ZFS Storage Appliance Cluster no management interface is defined to access each node.

Cause

By default, network interfaces configured on a ZFS Storage Appliance cluster are cluster resources (SINGLETON).

In an optimal state, cluster resources will be on their assigned head; however, following a takeover event, all cluster resources will be on the OWNER head.

This leaves the STRIPPED head with no network interfaces and only accessible via the ILOM.

In order for a STRIPPED node to retain a network interface it must be configured as PRIVATE, represented in the Browser User Interface (BUI) as a locked padlock.

Cluster States

  • AKCS_CLUSTERED : Both nodes are running in normal condition sharing resources.
  • AKCS_OWNER : One node in the cluster owns all of the shared cluster resources
  • AKCS_STRIPPED : One node has joined the cluster but does not own any cluster resources (the node is waiting for the administrator to perform a failback operation)
