Goal

How to replace an SL500 base module CAP door arm lock

Solution

Because the CAP door lock arm is damaged or broken, it is likely that either the CAP door will not latch when closed or will not open when the lock arm is pressed.

To remove the broken arm:

If the CAP door is closed, reach inside the library and press or wriggle the lock arm until the latch on the door is released and the door opens.

Use a thin flat-bladed screwdriver to pry the retainer ring off the lock arm pivot pin. Note: Before removing the lock arm, note how the lock arm is oriented and the spring is installed.

Lift the lock arm off the pivot pin.

Retrieve the spring and set aside.

To replace the arm:

Make sure the new CAP door lock arm is correctly oriented.

Install the lock arm on the pivot pin so that the gap at the front of the lock arm fits over the lock arm stop on the CAP.

Orient the new retainer ring so that the prongs are pointing up.

Install the new retainer ring onto the pivot pin.

Use a 3/16 inch nut driver to press the retainer ring onto the pivot pin until it is seated against the lock arm.

Check the lock arm to be sure there is no up or down movement

Pull the lock arm against the stop to maximize the gap between the lock arm and the boss on the CAP.

Fit one end of the spring partially into the slot in the boss.

Press the spring against the boss to compress it.

Continue to compress the spring until you can fit the other end of it into the slot on the lock arm.

Close the CAP door and press the lock arm to check the action of the lock arm.

Repeat this several more times to ensure the lock arm is operating properly
