Goal

IBM LTO - How To Get a Drive Dump from IBM LTO Drive via FC Data Path Using Tdump and WinTdump Utilities.

For the IBM LTO drives customers can pull dumps from their drives using the Oracle Tdump and WinTdump utilities.

For customers running Solaris and Linux they can use the Oracle Tdump utility.

For customers running Windows they can use the Oracle WinTdump utility.

Solution

Both the Tdump and WinTdump utilities are bundled in the latest code patch for IBM LTO5 and higher drives. These patches are available for download on My Oracle Support (MOS). For IBM LTO1, LTO2, LTO3, and LTO4 drives you can use the Tdump or WinTdump tools utilities from an IBM LTO5 code patch or simply ask your Oracle support representative for the Tdump and WinTdump utilities.

Note: The Tdump and WinTdump utilities will grab 2 dump files from the drive (one ending in ".a" and one ending in ".b") so please supply both of these files to Oracle Support.

Requirements:

  • The drive(s) will have to be data path connected to a host (media server) running either Linux, Solaris or Windows.
  • tdump requires a 64 bit Linux or Solaris (SPARC or X86) host operating system, 32 bit is not supported.
  • Unix: The "st" or "sg" kernel device driver is required for tdump to be able to communicate to the drive(s).
  • The user has to know the “root” user credentials to run the tdump program.
  • The firmware Patch has to be downloaded from MOS (via Patches & Updates) to the host.
  • The user has to either know the DMOD Tape drive serial number(s) or the corresponding "/dev" device file name(s) to make a proper selection.

Preparation

A) Download the required firmware Patch file from MOS (the Patch file will include the tdump binary)

B) Transfer the downloaded firmware file to your server connected to drives you need the dump from

To use the Oracle Tdump utility to pull a dump from your IBM LTO drives on Solaris and Linux please follow the following process:

  1. Change your user role as 'root'. Example: # su -
  2. Unzip the patch you have download from MOS and copied to a working directory on your server. Example: # unzip 150062-01.zip
  3. Create /datax directory under the root folder. Example: # mkdir /datax
  4. Copy the tdump.zip file to /datax directory. Example: # cp tdump.zip /datax
  5. Go to directory /datax. Example: # cd /datax
  6. Unzip the tdump.zip file. Example: # unzip tdump.zip

    The following files are contained in tdump.zip: tdump_Solaris_sparc, tdump_Solaris_x86, tdump_Linux, WinTdump installer.msi

    step6

  7. Start the tdump utility using the correct file:
    - For Solaris x86 use the file: "tdump_Solaris_x86". Example: # ./tdump_Solaris_x86
    - For Solaris Sparc use the file: "tdump_Solaris_sparc". Example: # ./tdump_Solaris_sparc
    - For Linux use the file: "tdump_Linux". Example: # ./tdump_Linux
  8. The tool will start and list your available drives.

    step8

  9. Select the tape device you want to take the dump from, only one device can be selected at a time.

    step9

  10. It takes about one minute to complete and it looks like this when completed.

    step10

  11. You should now have 2 new files in your /datax directory, one ending in ".a" and one ending in ".b" and the files name should also include the drive FW version, DMOD serial number and the date the file was collected.

    step11

    DONE!

If you now want to take another drive dump, you will need to start over with the ./tdump_... command and select the appropriate drive.

For more detailed instructions, see the PDF included in the patch file called: "IBM_Tape_Drive_Dump_Utility.pdf".

To install and use the Oracle WinTdump utility to pull a dump from your IBM LTO drives on Windows please follow the following process:

Note: Please run the WinTload utility as "Administrator" by right clicking on the program and selecting "Run as Administrator".

  1. Unzip the patch file to the PC that you want to install the Oracle WinTdump tool.
  2. Create \datax directory.
  3. Copy the tdump.zip file that came with the firmware file to \datax directory.
  4. Unzip the tdump.zip file.
  5. From the \datax directory double click on the WinTdump101_Installer.msi file and install the tool.
  6. Start the WinTdump tool by either double clicking on the shortcut on the Desktop or by selecting WinTdump from the Program list under your Windows programs.
  7. Select the drive (device) from the list that you would like to get the drive dump from.
  8. WinTdump will start the Force Dump process on the drive that you selected.
  9. When the drive dump process has completed a pop up message will indicate the dump file name and location of the dump files.

For more detailed instructions, see the PDF included in the patch file called: "IBM_Tape_Drive_Dump_Utility.pdf".
