Goal

Q. Is there any interoperability matrix for Cisco MDS 9222i switches?

The OPCA is connected through Cisco MDS 9222i FC switches to an Oracle FS1-2 Disk Storage array

Oracle recommended to upgrade the existing Oracle FS1-2 firmware, and they want to know if will be compatible with current version of Cisco MDS 9222i firmware.

From Oracle Private Cloud Appliance documentation , Oracle Private Cloud Appliance  2.1.x (OPCA) is composed internally of several Oracle Servers X5-2 with infiniband cards (no FC HBAs on these X5-2 nodes), Oracle Fabric Interconnect F1-15 (Xsigo) and Oracle ZFS Z3 storage , but it does not include any SAN FC Cisco switch.

Note. On current configuration, SAN-OS 4.2(3) on Cisco MDS 9222i is working fine with FS1-2 Storage code 6.1.19 and Oracle Private Cloud Appliance 2.1.x

Solution

From the connectivity point of view, the Oracle Fabric Interconnect F1-15 (Xsigo) is the component of the OPCA that is connected to the Cisco MDS FC switch  (and the Oracle FS1-2 Disk Storage array is connected to the same Cisco MDS FC switch)

so we need to find if the component connected is on any interoperability matrix

1) From the Cisco FC switch MDS 9222i point of view, the interoperability matrix is here:

"Interoperability Matrix for Cisco Nexus and MDS 9000 Products" , October, 2015

https://www.cisco.com/c/en/us/td/docs/switches/datacenter/mds9000/interoperability/matrix/intmatrx.pdf

or

https://www.cisco.com/c/en/us/td/docs/switches/datacenter/mds9000/interoperability/matrix/intmatrx/Matrix1.html

Note. At current date Aug 2016, there is no reference to Oracle FS1-2 or Oracle Fabric Interconnect F1-15 (Xsigo)

2) From Oracle Flash Storage Support and Interoperability Guide, Cisco MDS 9000 Series are supported with firmware SAN-OS 5.2.x and 6.2.x, see Page 25 and 26
"This chapter summarizes the third-party products that are either fully certified for compatibility or have passed testing for basic interoperability. The certification testing was performed either by Oracle or by the third-party manufacturer."

Notice. FS1-2 Storage has been tested with MDS 9000 Series FC Firmware level SAN-OS 5.2.x and 6.2.x,
but this does not mean it won't work with 4.2.X (currently it is working fine), just that it was never tested.

3) From the Xsigo switch product, there is no compatibility list between Cisco SAN firmware and Xsigo firmware.

Xsigo should be capable to work with all SAN switches and we are not aware of any issues with Cisco SAN switches.

Conclusion: On this particular scenario, where Oracle FS1-2 storage is connected to Cisco MDS 9222i switch, Oracle recommendation is to upgrade Cisco MDS 9222i FC swicth to Cisco SAN-OS 5.2.x or 6.2.x

Newer versions of firmware for Cisco MDS 9222i FC swicth can be found here:
