Goal

Maintain the drive tray serial number database in SL8500 or SL3000

Solution

Understand:

If you replace any tape drive in SL8500 or SL3000, which has previously drive tray serial number entered manually using SLConsole, it will revert to "Unknown" again!

This behavior in not a bug, and it needs to be addressed during every drive replacement.

See more about drive tray serial numbers in KB: SL3000/SL8500 - Drive Tray Serial Number Initiative Notes (Doc ID 2072354.1)

Notice:

When ever considering replacing a tape drive in SL3000 or SL8500 you should first check:

A) If the drive tray serial number is already populated in SLC. See KB: SL8500/SL3000 - How to View Serial Number of Drive Tray Using SL Console (Doc ID 2052530.1)

B) If the drive tray has LOD card in it. See KB: SL8500/SL3000 How to verify if LOD or HBD card is installed (Doc ID 2059566.1)

Deduct:

Scenario 1: Tray SN found in SLC, No LOD in the tray

If the drive does have the drive tray SN populated in SLC, and the drive tray does not have LOD card in it, you need to save the tray SN before the drive replacement!

Scenario 2: No Tray SN found in SLC, No LOD in the tray

If the drive does not have the drive tray SN populated in SLC, you should consider entering it based on KB: (Doc ID 2072354.1)

Scenario 3: Tray SN found in SLC, LOD in the tray

If the drive tray does have LOD card, you don't need to do anything. Drive replacement does not have an impact of the tray SN value in SLC. That is the whole purpose of the LOD card.

Maintain:

How to copy and maintain manually entered tray SN using SLConsole:

A) Before drive replacement, copy the tray SN to a clipboard on your PC:

SLConsole:

1. Select Tools > Configuration
2. Click the Drive Tray S/N tab.
3. Click Refresh to display the current data.
4. To copy an individual drive tray serial number:

a. Double-click the Drive Tray S/N field
b. Highlight the complete tray SN by pressing: Ctrl + A
c. Copy the complete tray SN by pressing: Ctrl + C

5. Open a text editor and paste the copied value there.

B) After drive replacement, copy the tray SN back using SLConsole:

SLConsole:

1. Select Tools > Configuration
2. Click the Drive Tray S/N tab.
3. Click Refresh to display the current data.
4. To add individual drive tray serial number:

a. Copy the tray SN from the text editor where you saved it.
b. Double-click the Drive Tray S/N field
c. Paste the complete tray SN by pressing: Ctrl + V

5. Click Apply, then Yes
