Goal

What does the SC/lom message mean when booting the domain from platform shell and fails like:

{1} ok boot

Waiting for SC to respond to mbox msg: type 1002 buf:reboot-command
...
Waiting for SC to respond to mbox msg: type 1002 buf:auto-boot?
...
Resetting ...
Waiting for SC to respond to mbox msg: type 1006 buf:
...
ERROR: machine_reset_all: SC mailbox reset command failed!

Solution

On the 6800/6900/4800/4900/3800 failover to spare SC or reboot/reset the main SC (avoid if possible to use the Reset button).
On the 1280/1290/2900 perform a power cycle of the server due to these server only have a single build in SC

Please keep in mind the following:

Using the Reset Button on A Main System Controller May Cause Domain Outage (Doc ID 1000134.1)

As a reference:

Sun Fire[TM] 3800-6900: System Controller failover functionality (Doc ID 1003245.1)

Cause

#define OBP_SETNVRAM 0x1002
#define OBP_RESET 0x1006

The main SC/lom did not get a response from the domain in 20 seconds and timed out.

In the following case
ERROR: machine_reset_all: SC mailbox reset command failed!

the platform reset failed due to time out.
