Applies to:

Exalytics In-Memory Machine X2-4 - Version All Versions and later
Oracle Exalytics Software - Version 1.0.0.1.0 to 2.0.0.0.0 [Release 1.0 to 2.0]
Information in this document applies to any platform.

Goal

Currently using an Exalytics X2-4, OVM 3.2.4 server with OBIEE 11g and TimesTen (TT) installed on an OVM guest. The physical machine will be moved to a new Data Center and will have new network settings for host IP, gateway, etc.

What is the recommended method to move this server to the new environment?

Solution

This move involves both physical changes, (new Data Center, new rack, etc.) and software changes, (new network configuration and applications software changes ).

Information on the physical move is described in the Exalytics Owner's Guide.  Software setup and install are described in the Exalytics Install Guide.

Currently, the latest version of Exalytics is Exalytics Release 2.0.0.0.0. This version includes an OVM 3.2.9 upgrade for X2-4/X3-4 and X4-4 machines. With release 2.0.0.0.0, there is also an option to do a full re-image and then deploy OVM 3.2.9 with Linux 6. All Exalytics customers are encouraged to upgrade to the latest version.

In this case, since the Data Center move would require reworking the network and potentially re-installing the products, the recommended approach is to do a full re-image to OVM 3.2.9 with Linux 6.  A reimage will remove the existing installed OVMs and applications, but offers the following benefits:

- Most current, certified version for your server type.
- Provides available bug fixes and features.
- Includes option to reimage to Linux 6 guest and a more current kernel.
- Linux 6 reimage also preserves other options, (such as future install of OBIEE 12c if desired).

A reimage will require reinstalling the OVM Manager, OVM Guests and applications software (OBIEE and TT).  You can speed up the reinstall of OBIEE by taking backups of the OBIEE Repository (RPD), Web catalog, configuration files and any customizations before the Data Center move.  For TimesTen, you can take a database backup.

Once the machine has been re-imaged with OVM 3.2.9, you can reinstall the software applications and then restore the backed up artifacts.

Further details are available in the Exalytics Install Guide.  Please also consult the Exalytics Owner's Guide for general tips on setting up and racking the server in the new Data Center.
