Goal


Enabling HCC compression on ASM disk group with partitions may fail with below error messages:

Trying to enable HCC compression on new Oracle Flash Storage FS1 on 12c database version. When setting attribute


alter diskgroup 'data_name' set attribute 'storage.type' = 'AXIOM'


receive the following error messages


ERROR at line 1:
ORA-15032: not all alterations performed
ORA-15242: could not set attribute storage.type
ORA-15287: could not set disk group attribute storage.type due to incompatible disks
ORA-15285: disk '/dev/mapper/data_name' violates disk group attribute storage.type
Parameter compatible for ASM instance is 12.1.0.2.0


Solution


The errors are coming from the devices which has partitions.


ASM will have no problem working with partitions. But the SCSI query that brings back the vendor ID will not transferred correctly for partitions or when a file system has been created on devices.


The simple solution is:


    

  1. Create the same number and size of LUNs again.
    2. 

  2. Discover the LUNs on the server (as the grid user or owner).
    3. 

  3. Add the LUNs to ASM.
    4. 

  4. Wait for the ASM background rebalance to complete.
    5. 

  5. Delete the partitioned LUNs/ASM disks from ASM.
    6. 

  6. Run the commands again.
    7.
