The eight Fan modules (FMs) are designated FM 0 through FM 7 with FM 0, 2, 4, and 6 across the front bottom left to right, and FM 1, 3, 5, and 7 across the front top left to right.

Fan Module Overview

The eight Fan modules (FMs) provide cooling to the CPU modules (CMODs) and PCIe card slots by pushing air through the server from the front to the back. The FMs are hot-swap capable and provide redundancy as long as no more than 2 fans are removed at a time.  Additionally, the FMs and frames have a relationship to the compute modules (CMODs), which are installed directly behind the FMs (and for which the FMs provide cooling). The left-side frame contains the FMs (0–3) that provide cooling for CMODs 0–3, and the right-side frame contains the FMs (4–7) that provide cooling for CMODs 4–7.


How to Remove a Fan Module

Caution - Potential for system over-temperature and component damage. Do not attempt to operate the system with insufficient cooling. Maintain the integrity of a properly functioning cooling system by immediately replacing nonworking components and ensuring unobstructed airflow.
==========================================================================


Note - The Fan module is a hot-swap component.


1.Identify the fan module by its position and designation or, if it is in a failed state, by its steady on Service Action Required indicator.  A fan in a fault state has a lit amber-color Service Action Required indicator.

2.To unlock the fan module, push in the green release button.

3.To remove, pull the FM out of the server.

Caution ‐ Electrical hazard. During a hot-service procedure, voltage is present. Do not reach into the vacant fan module slot with your hand or any object. Do not touch the exposed CMOD fan module power connector.

Caution - Server over-temperature condition. When a Fan module is removed, the airflow vanes in the Subassembly module automatically close to maintain the integrity of the server cooling system. Do not defeat the purpose of the airflow vanes.

How to Install a Fan Module

1.Align the fan module with the slot.

2.To install the fan module, slide it into the slot until it stops and gently push it inward until the fan module locks into place.  The locking action is accompanied by a click sound.

3.Verify that the green Fan OK indicator on the fan module lights and is on steady.


How to verify the Fan module working properly.

log into ILOM to confirm if Fan module is working properly.

-> show /System/Cooling/Fans/Fan_x

note:the "x" means which Fan Module number your replaced

Check ILOM event log to see if any errors are related to Fan Module.
