Goal

This documents explains how to get a drive dump from an IBM LTO Drive with the Tdump and WinTdump Utilities

Solution

For Linux and Solaris connected IBM LTO drives you can get a dump from the drive using the Oracle Tdump utility.

For Windows connected IBM LTO drives you can get a dump from the drive using the Oracle WinTdump utility.

Both the Tdump and WinTdump utilities are bundled in the latest code patch for IBM LTO5 and higher drives.  For IBM LTO1, LTO2, LTO3, and LTO4 drives you can use the Tdump or WinTdump tools utilities from an IBM LTO5 code patch or simply ask your Oracle support representative for the Tdump and WinTdump utilities.

Note: The Tdump and WinTdump utilities will grab 2 dump files from the drive (one ending in ".a" and one ending in ".b") so please supply both of these files to Oracle Support.

To install and run Tdump on Solaris and Linux please follow the following process:

  1. Create a /datax directory under the root folder
  2. Move the tdump.zip file to the /datax directory
  3. Unzip the tdump.zip file in that /datax directory  Example = # unzip ./tdump.zip
  4. The following files are contained in tdump.zip: tdump_Solaris_sparc,tdump_Solaris_x86, tdump_Linux, WinTdump installer
  5. For Solaris Sparc servers: In /datax directory, as root, type the "./tdump_Solaris_sparc" command  Example = /datax # ./tdump_Solaris_sparc
  6. For Solaris x86 servers: In /datax directory, as root, type the "./tdump_Solaris_x86" command  Example = /datax # ./tdump_Solaris_x86
  7. For Linux servers: In /datax directory, as root, type the "./tdump_Linux" command  Example = /datax # ./tdump_Linux
  8. Select the tape device you want to take the dump from, only one device can be selected at a time.
  9. After the drive dump has been taken if you want to take another drive dump, you will need to start over with the ./tdump_... command and select the appropriate drive.

For more details and examples on this process please see the attached "IBM_Tape_Drive_Dump_Utility.doc" in the reference section below.

To install and run WinTdump on Windows please follow the following instructions:

Note: Please run the WinTdump utility as "Administrator" by right clicking on the program and selecting "Run as Administrator"

  1. Unzip the tdump.zip file to the PC that you want to install the Oracle WinTdump tool on
  2. From the \datax directory double click on the WinTdump_Installer.msi file and install the tool
  3. Start the WinTdump tool by either double clicking on the shortcut on the Desktop or by selecting WinTdump from the Program list under your Windows programs
  4. Select the drive (device) from the list that you would like to get the drive dump from
  5. WinTdump will start the Force Dump process on the drive that you selected
  6. When the drive dump process has completed a pop up message will indicate the dump file name and location of the dump files

For more details and examples on this process please see the attached "IBM_Tape_Drive_Dump_Utility.doc" in the reference section below.
