SolutionDISPATCH INSTRUCTIONS WHAT SKILLS DOES THE FIELD ENGINEER/ADMINISTRATOR NEED?: TIME ESTIMATE: 60 minutes TASK COMPLEXITY: 1 FIELD ENGINEER/ADMINISTRATOR INSTRUCTIONS: PROBLEM OVERVIEW: A Sun Fire X4800, Sun Server X2-8 (Sun Fire X4800 M2) Fan Module Controller Board needs replacement WHAT STATE SHOULD THE SYSTEM BE IN TO BE READY TO PERFORM THE RESOLUTION ACTIVITY? : If the system is still up and functioning, customer should perform an orderly and graceful shutdown of applications and OS. Then power off the server and remove the AC power cords from the system. A data backup is not a prerequisite but is a wise precaution. Note: If this server is part of an Exadata, please follow shutdown instructions in Section 1 of DOC ID: 1539451.1
WHAT ACTION DOES THE ENGINEER NEED TO TAKE: Note: There are two fan module controller boards, FB 0 and FB 1. Each fan module controller board (FB) controls two fan modules. The FBs are located at the back of the server, behind fan modules. Fan Module Designations:
Remove the fan module controller board: 1. Shutdown the OS and power off the server. 2. Remove the power cables from the server. 3. Remove the fan modules that are controlled by the fan board that you need to replace. 4. To remove the fan shelf, press down on the green release tab and slide the shelf out of the fan bay. 5. Completely loosen the green captive screw that secures the fan board. 6. To remove the fan board, pull the handle on the controller board assembly.
Install the fan module controller board: 1. Use the handle on the controller board assembly to insert the new fan board into the server. Ensure that the connector on the FB engages with the connector on the Subassembly Module (SAM). 2. To secure the fan board assembly, fully tighten the green captive screw. 3. Orient the fan shelf with the green release tab facing upward. 4. To install the fan shelf, align it with the guides in the fan bay and slide it in until it locks into place. This action creates a click sound as the shelf locks into place. 5. Install the fan modules.
OBTAIN CUSTOMER ACCEPTANCE WHAT ACTION DOES THE CUSTOMER NEED TO TAKE TO RETURN THE SYSTEM TO AN OPERATIONAL STATE: Plug power cables back to server and log into ILOM to confirm if the fan board is working properly, the example below shows information for fan board 0: -> show /SYS/FB0 /SYS/FB0

Commands: If both fan boards are seen then boot the server up to the OS, and return the server back to customer
