Goal

The Linux global system messages file /var/log/messages on DOM0 on Virtualized Exalytics Server is full of these messages:

Dec 13 05:42:44 srv-xxx-x kernel: qlcnic 0000:a0:00.1: link state down
Dec 13 05:42:44 srv-xxx-x kernel: qlcnic 0000:e0:00.0: link state down
Dec 13 05:42:44 srv-xxx-x kernel: qlcnic 0000:e0:00.1: link state down
Dec 13 05:43:14 srv-xxx-x kernel: qlcnic 0000:a0:00.0: link state down
Dec 13 05:43:14 srv-xxx-x kernel: qlcnic 0000:a0:00.1: link state down

No other networking issues or errors are observed on the Server.

What do these messages mean and can we ignore them?

Solution

The message "kernel: qlcnic 0000:a0:00.0: link state down" are a reference to the qlogic fiber NIC which are not connected to anything, hence no link is detected. The network functionality of the Qlogic cards are not even supported in a Virtualized Exalytics so this would be the normal configuration and not an issue with the environment.

You can ignore these messages.
