CAP PROBLEM OVERVIEW: How to update XCP firmware

To report errors or request improvements on this procedure, please go to My Oracle Support, and  put a comment on Doc ID: 2105781.1

Notes:
  • execute the rebootxscf(8) command from the Active XSCF to reset the Active (and the Standby XSCF if applicable) before upgrading this XCP release
  • although upgrading XCP Firmware from CLI is the preferred method, it's possible to upgrade from the BUI : Menu / Utilities / Firmware Update.

Before starting the firmware update procedure, obtain the latest XCP firmware by downloading the appropriate patch to a location that is network-connected with the XSCF unit.

Make sure to check Fujitsu M10-1/M10-4/M10-4S XSCF Control Package (XCP) Firmware Image Software Version Matrix Information (Doc ID 1554086.1) or Fujitsu M12-2/M12-2S XSCF Control Package (XCP) Firmware Image Software Version Matrix Information (Doc ID 2241012.1) to ensure you are using the latest available XCP version for the Fujitsu M10/M12 servers or the Fujitsu M10 PCI Expansion Unit.

Consult "Fujitsu M10 PCI Expansion Unit Firmware Version Matrix Information (Doc ID 1924671.1)" to locate the proper firmware for the PCI Expansion Unit.

Decompress the patch file in the network location on which you downloaded it, and which is reachable by the XSCF.

DISPATCH INSTRUCTIONS

WHAT SKILLS DOES THE ENGINEER NEED: M10/M12 Product Training/Experience

TASK COMPLEXITY: 2

TIME ESTIMATE: 60 minutes (excluding possible all PPAR stop/start )

Sysadmin / FIELD ENGINEER INSTRUCTIONS

WHAT STATE SHOULD THE SYSTEM BE IN TO BE READY TO PERFORM THE RESOLUTION ACTIVITY? : n/a

WHAT ACTION DOES THE ENGINEER NEED TO TAKE:

The XCP firmware procedure exclusively runs on the active XSCF unit, if your system has multiple XSCFs, log in to the Master XSCF:

1. Updating firmware requires a user with either platadm or fieldeng privileges, run the showuser command to confirm having appropriate privileges

2. Run getflashimage, to import the new XCP firmware onto the main XSCF unit, example:

  • Through a network connection: getflashimage -u <username> ftp://<hostname or IP address>/<directory>/BBXCP2320.tar.gz
  • Through a usb drive: getflashimage file:///media/usb_msd/<directory>/BBXCP2320.tar.gz

3. To confirm the XCP firmware image download was successful, run getflashimage -l

4. To check if firmware can be updated with PPARs running, run flashupdate -c check -m xcp -s 2320
This command will not return anything if it is ok perform the upgrade.

5. To actually update the firmware, run flashupdate -c update -m xcp -s 2320

6. Wait until the XSCF serial port or showlogs monitor output indicates the update has completed:

July  9 12:01:43 M10-1-0 Event: SCF:XCP update has been completed (XCP version=2320:last version=2290)

7. To determine if all PPARs need to be stopped and started (using XSCF poweroff and poweron command), you can check the information in "Fujitsu M10-1/M10-4/M10-4S XSCF Control Package (XCP) Firmware Image Software Version Matrix Information (Doc ID 1554086.1)" or Fujitsu M12-2/M12-2S XSCF Control Package (XCP) Firmware Image Software Version Matrix Information (Doc ID 2241012.1):

     - Compare the values listed for CMU, POST, OBP and Hypervisor for the XCP version used prior to installing, and for the XCP version that just finished installing
     - If all 4 values are identical for both the currently used and the previous XCP firmware, an all ppar stop/start is not necessary
     - In any other case, all PPARs need to be stopped and started, to start using the new CMU, POST, OBP and Hypervisor software

OBTAIN CUSTOMER ACCEPTANCE

WHAT ACTION DOES THE CUSTOMER NEED TO TAKE TO RETURN THE SYSTEM TO AN OPERATIONAL STATE:

If PPARs need to stopped, make sure all PPARs successfully get started
