Goal

To create a "hidden" SMB share, that is a share which can be accessed via SMB specifying the server and share name but such that won't be listed if the SMB client browse the list of shares exported by the server.

Solution

On Windows, the SMB client software 'hides' the share names which ends with a $ sign.

Notice that this is a windows-specific convention implemented at the client level and does not depend on the permissions settings configured on the ZFSSA for the share.

The Oracle ZFS Storage Appliance (ZFSSA) has some restriction on using non-alphanumeric characters.

The name of the shares can only be using alphanumeric charaters and few special characters excluding the $ sign.

However the share name used to identify the share within ZFSSA does not need to be the same as the share name used from an SMB perspective, called an SMB Resource Name.

In regard to this matter our documentation explains:

SMB Shares

    Resource names must be less than 80 characters, and can contain any alphanumeric characters besides the following characters: " / \ [ ] : | < > + ; , ? * =

In order to  create a share with a "SMB Resource Name" that contains an ending $,  please follow these steps

  •  Connect to the ZFSSA using Web UI
  •  Go to Shares > Shares , clik on +Filesystem and create a new share (for example "mytest")
  •  Double click on the share name to edit the settings
  •  Click on "Protocols"
  •  In the section "SMB" uncheck the "Inherit from project" box
  •  In the field "Resource Name" write a SMB resource name which ends with $ (for example "mytest$" )
  •  Click on apply

If you attempt to map the network drive using \\ZFSSA\mytest$, you will be able to access it.

Instead, if you browse to \\ZFSSA you will not see any share named after mytest$

Notice: Here 'ZFSSA' shall be replaced with the IP Address or hostname of the appliance and mytest$ is the SMB resource name.

Notice: It is a prerequisite, before making these steps, to configure the Active Directory settings and to activate the SMB and Active Directory services under Configuration > Services
