DISPATCH INSTRUCTIONS

WHAT SKILLS DOES THE ENGINEER NEED:(IS A SITE ENGINEER AVAILABLE?)
Sun Fire V445 product training is desirable but not required

TASK COMPLEXITY: 1

TIME ESTIMATE: 45 minutes

FIELD ENGINEER INSTRUCTIONS

PROBLEM OVERVIEW: failed sas Controller card

OBTAIN CUSTOMER ACCEPTANCE
WHAT STATE SHOULD THE SYSTEM BE IN TO BE READY TO PERFORM THE RESOLUTION ACTIVITY? :

A data backup is not a pre-requisite but is a wise precaution.
The customer should conduct an orderly software system shutdown.

WHAT ACTION DOES THE ENGINEER NEED TO TAKE:

Steps to Follow

1. Power Off the System

2. Slide the Server Out of the Cabinet

3. Avoid Electrostatic Discharge by following proper grounding

4. Removing the Top Cover

5. Gently remove the multilane data cable from its slot on the motherboard.

refer to V445 Service manual page 130-131

6. Remove the Phillips screw securing the connector board to the CPU/Memory module cage.

7. Lift the Connector board out of the chassis.

refer to V445 Service manual page 126

8) From the replacement PCI-E SAS Controller , Capture the "FC 9" address number on the yellow label. This will make it easier in future steps so you do not have to remove the card again if you need to program the WWID.

9. Connect the multilane data cable to the Connector board.  Insert the connector until it snaps into place.

10. Insert the Connector board onto the SAS backplane.

11. Secure the Connector board by installing the Phillips screw.

refer to V445 Service manual page 128

12) Install the SAS Connector cable , make sure the other end of the SAS Cable is connected to Mother board connector J6901

refer to V445 Service manual page 132

NOTE: Some sas controller may need to set the World Wide Number (WWID).

To verify if the WWID is programmed on your F501-7244 FRU check that the new card can see all the SAS drives that are installed in the system. If you can see all the disks, then the WWID is in place, and you can skip the WWID programming steps below.

13) Power on system and get to the OBP prompt (ok).  You may need to disable auto-boot? at OBP

14)Probe for disks:

ok probe-scsi-all

If all the disks are present proceed to step 22

Note: If you get the following message then you need to program you WWID on the F501-7244. To program the WWIDroceed to next step.

"/pci@1e,600000/pci@0/pci@2/scsi@0
Base SAS World Wide ID is 0!
This must be fixed immediately using set-sas-wwid"

15) Make sure you are at the OBP level.

16)Select the controller:

ok>select /pci@1e,600000/pci@0/pci@2/scsi@0

17)Show sas wwid:

ok show-sas-wwid

(If it gives you a ? or is not the number recorded in Step 8 Above, proceed to step 18)

18)Set the sas wwid:

ok 5000605b xxxxxxxxx set-sas-wwid

(5000605b is the V445 system wide number, xxxxxxxx(9 numbers) is the WWID on the yellow sticker of the sas controller).

19)Verify sas wwid:

ok show-sas-wwid

20) Unselect and reset system:

ok unselect-dev

ok reset-all

21)Verify disks are present:

ok probe-scsi-all

22) Reinstall top cover.

23) Slide server into cabinet and secure.
