Goal

How to Remove and Replace SM6 J4410 JBOD Chassis Assembly

Solution

AP PROBLEM OVERVIEW: J4410 Chassis Assembly

WHAT SKILLS DOES THE ENGINEER NEED

VSM6, ZFS, Solaris and Sun SPARC Training

TIME ESTIMATE: 180 minutes

TASK COMPLEXITY: 4

WHAT STATE SHOULD SYSTEM BE IN TO BE READY TO PERFORM RESOLUTION ACTIVITY? :

From the Host:

1. Quiesce all I/O between hosts and the VSM storage appliance.

2. Vary the VTSS offline to gracefully shut down backend activity and prevent new VTCS initiated RTD or vRTD actions.

Note: The VSM6 will be shut down so it is necessary to be sure it is isolated from the customer operations.

From the VSM6:

Shutdown VSM6

1. Log into either node via putty.

2. On both nodes, issue the following command to disable ASR.  Run the command (ssh other-vtss-node) to access the second node or open a separate putty session to the second node.

     sudo /opt/vsm/bin/asr_sfb_cfg.pl ASR_DISABLE

3. Issue the following command on one of the nodes to stop the VSM application (tikka).  This command performs a shutdown of both nodes' VSM application.

     /opt/vsm/bin/killtikka.pl

4. Issue the following command multiple times until it reports no services active:

    /usr/cluster/bin/scstat –g

5. Once all services are down then continue.

6. Run the following command on both nodes to power off the servers.

  date;sync;sync;sudo uadmin 2 6

or for VSM6 systems running 7.0.0.x and later code,

  date;sync;sync;sudo resetNode 2 6

Verifying Chassis Failure

1. Power LED (front) is amber

2. Audible alarm sounding.

3. All component fault LEDs green (Disk(front), SIM Power LED (back), Power supply LEDs (back)).

Prerequisites

1. ESD Precautions.

2. Remove all power from chassis and components

WHAT ACTION DOES THE ENGINEER NEED TO TAKE:

Removing Chassis

1. From back cabinet, locate chassis being replaced

2. Disconnect power cord from each power supply

3. Label mini-SAS cable for reconnection on the replacement chassis

4. Disconnect mini-SAS cables

5. Power Supply-- Loosen two captive thumb screws on power supply ejection levers and swing ejection levers fully outward to partially eject power supply

6. Pull power supply out of tray.

7. Remove the SIM boards in the same manner as the power supplies in steps 5 and 6.

8. Disk Drives-- Press release button in and to right to release disk extraction lever. Swing extraction lever. Grasp middle of disk drive and pull toward you to remove from tray

9. Record slot location on other drive casing for reinstall

10. Store disk drive in a static-free environment

11. Chassis Remove two system locking clips from lower corners of rear chassis

12. Front of cabinet, loosen four captive screws, two on either side

13. Grasp each side of chassis and pull it toward you, remove from cabinet

Installing Chassis

1. Front of cabinet, slide new chassis into cabinet until front flanges of chassis touch vertical face of cabinet

2. Tighten captive screws on each side

3. Back of cabinet, slide system locking clip onto each lower corner of chassis

Installing CRUs

1. Front of cabinet, install each disk drive and disk filler. Unlatch and swing extraction lever. Slide the drive into tray until extraction lever engages with tray connectors and the lever begins to swing closed. Press the extraction lever closed

2. Back of cabinet, install 2 SIM boards in SIM slots. Swing both extraction levers fully open position. Slide it into tray until it engages with tray connectors. Simultaneously push both extraction levers toward middle of board to seat it in tray. Tighten extraction lever captive screws.

3. Install the two power supplies in the same manner as the SIM cards in step 2.

Finalizing

1. Back of cabinet, reconnect power cables into power supply

2. Replace tie strap on each power cord

3. Turn on power power supplies.

4. If disconnected then log into node 1 via putty.

5. Start node 1 with the following command:
    uadmin 2 1

6. Issue the following command to monitor the progress of the node 1 IML:
    /usr/cluster/bin/scstat -g

Specifically, check to verify the vsm1-rs service comes online.

Once the vsm1-rs service is online continue.

7. Log into node 2 via putty.  Repeat steps 6 and 7 above but monitor for vsm2-rs to come online.

8. From both nodes, issue the following commands to discover the new JBOD and re-enable ASR:
    sudo /opt/vsm/bin/asr_sfb_cfg.pl REDISCOVER_DEVICES
    sudo /opt/vsm/bin/asr_sfb_cfg.pl ASR_ENABLE

9. The replacement JBOD chassis is expected to have arrived with an internal serial number / name that is different from the physical serial number / label on the JBOD.
Consequently it is necessary to change the internal (electronic) serial number / name to match the physical serial number label on the JBOD.
Here is how that correction is done:
        A. Download the instructions located here: JBOD Renaming Instructions
        B. Download the JTT package located here: JTT Package
        C. Use the downloaded JBOD Renaming Instructions to correct the serial number / name of the newly installed JBOD chassis.

10. Run a healthcheck via each node and check the output to verify all is well:
     sudo /opt/vsm/bin/vsm_HealthCheck

Checking Status

OK -> All tray and drive OK/Power LEDs are steady green and amber Service Required LEDs are off.

Amber LED blinking for any module: Reset module. If still Amber, contact Sun Customer Service Personnel

If alarm sounds after plugging in first power cord, the alarm will shut off once second power cord is connected.

When the reboot of the VLE server completes open a terminal window and check zpool status. Issue the following command: zpool status

Verify the status of zpools is good.
