FIELD ENGINEER/ADMINISTRATOR INSTRUCTIONS:

PROBLEM OVERVIEW: An Oracle Server X5-2L, X6-2L Rear Disk Backplane needs replacement

WHAT STATE SHOULD THE SYSTEM BE IN TO BE READY TO PERFORM THE RESOLUTION ACTIVITY? :

If the system is still up and functioning, customer should perform an orderly and graceful shutdown of applications and OS.  Then power off the server and remove the AC power cords from the system.

A data backup is not a prerequisite but is a wise precaution.

WHAT ACTION DOES THE ENGINEER NEED TO TAKE:

Remove the rear disk back plane

1. Prepare the server for service.

  1. Power off the server and disconnect the power cords from the power supplies
  2. Extend the server into the maintenance position
  3. Attach an antistatic wrist strap to your wrist, and then to a metal area on the chassis
  4. Remove the server top cover.
  5. Swivel the air baffle into the upright position to allow access to the rear disk backplane

2. Pull each rear-mounted disk out far enough to disengage it from the rear disk backplane

It is not necessary to completely remove the storage drives from the server, simply pull them out far enough to disengage them from the disk backplane. If you do remove the storage drives from the server, make a note of their locations so that you can reinstall them in the same locations.

3. Disconnect the cables

  1. Disconnect the two SAS cables from the rear disk backplane
  2. Disconnect the power cable from the rear disk backplane

4. Using a No. 2 Phillips screwdriver, loosen the two screws that secure the rear disk backplane to the storage drive cage

5. Lift the rear disk backplane up to release it from the two standoff hooks

6. Pull the rear disk backplane away from the standoff hooks and out of the chassis

7. Place the storage drive backplane on an antistatic mat

Install the rear disk backplane

1. Lower the rear disk backplane into the server, and position it to engage the two standoff hooks

2. Using a No. 2 Phillips screwdriver, install and tighten the two screws to secure the rear disk backplane to the storage drive cage

3. Reconnect the cables

  1. Reconnect the power cable to the rear disk backplane
  2. Reconnect the two SAS cables to the rear disk backplane

4. Return the server to operation

  1. Lower the air baffle to the installed position
  2. Install the server top cover
  3. Install all storage drives into the rear storage drive cage
  4. Return the server to the normal rack position
  5. Reconnect the power cords to the power supplies, and power on the server
