Goal

There are circumstances in which it may not be possible to access the ILOMs by using ssh to access the Pilot.  This document provides an alternate method of getting to the Integrated Lights Out Management (ILOM) of an FS1-2.

Solution

 In order to successfully use this method the following conditions must be met:

  • At least one of the FS1-2 Controllers must be booted and on the Private Management Interface (PMI).
  • If access to the Pilot is the end goal, it too, must be on the PMI.
  • A NULL modem cable with an RJ45m connector on one end (other connector to be determined by your terminal device.
  • If using a laptop, a software program like PuTTY for terminal emulation.

Establish a serial connection to the SER MGT port on the back of the Controller

  1. Connect the NULL modem cable's RJ45m connector to the SER MGT port on the back of one of the FS1-2 Controllers and the other end to your laptop.
  2. Make the following settings in your terminal emulation software:
    • 9600 baud
    • 8+1+N or 8 bits, 1 stop bit and no parity
    • No flow control
    • Appropriate comm port based on your laptop
  3. Press return to get a login prompt and login with root/changeme username/password
  4. You can now execute ILOM commands from this Controller.

 If you need to access other components in the FS1-2 use these steps:

  1. Start the HOST Console from the ILOM:
    -> start /HOST/Console
    Are you sure you want to start /HOST/console (y/n)? y

    Serial console started. To stop, type ESC (
    WN508002000XXXXXX1 login:

    NOTE: remember the exit command is the ESC key followed by (

  2. Log in as root (no password needed).
  3. To access the other Controller's ILOM, ssh to 169.254.2.9 and the default password of changeme:
    WN508002000XXXXXX1 # ssh 169.254.2.9
    Password:

    Oracle(R) Integrated Lights Out Manager

    Version 3.1.2.40 r93718

    Copyright (c) 2014, Oracle and/or its affiliates. All rights reserved.

    Warning: password is set to factory default.

    ->

  4. If you need to access a Pilot ILOM, use the PMI Network:
    WN508002000XXXXXX1 # ssh 172.30.80.2
    You are entering the operating system shell. By proceeding you have agreed that THIS ACTION MAY VOID ANY SUPPORT AGREEMENT.
    If you do not agree to this --- or don`t otherwise understand what you are doing --- you should type "exit" at the shell
    prompt. EVERY COMMAND THAT YOU ENTER HERE IS AUDITED, and support personnel may use this audit trail to substantiate
    invalidating your support contract. The operating system shell is NOT a supported mechanism for managing this appliance,
    and COMMANDS EXECUTED HERE MAY DO IRREPARABLE HARM.

    NOTHING SHOULD BE ATTEMPTED HERE BY UNTRAINED SUPPORT PERSONNEL UNDER ANY CIRCUMSTANCES. This appliance is a non-traditional
    operating system environment, and expertise in a traditional operating system environment in NO WAY constitutes training for
    supporting this appliance. THOSE WITH EXPERTISE IN OTHER SYSTEMS - HOWEVER SUPERFICIALLY SIMILAR - ARE MORE LIKELY TO MISTAKENLY
    EXECUTE OPERATIONS HERE THAT WILL DO IRREPARABLE HARM. Unless you have been explicitly trained on supporting this appliance via
    the operating system shell, you should immediately return to the appliance shell.

    Type "exit" now to logout.

    [root@pilot1 ~]#

    NOTE: the above example is for Pilot1, Pilot2's PMI IP address is 172.30.80.3

  5. Once on the Pilot, use its ILOM connections to access the ILOM you need.  This example shows how to access the other Pilot's ILOM:
    [root@pilot1 ~]# ssh 169.254.2.9
    Password:

    Oracle(R) Integrated Lights Out Manager

    Version 3.2.4.34 r95732

    Copyright (c) 2014, Oracle and/or its affiliates. All rights reserved.

    Warning: password is set to factory default.

    Hostname: ORACLESP-1516NMXXXX

    ->

    NOTE: to access the Pilot's own ILOM, use 169.254.2.5

  6. When finished, be sure to exit all the way back to the original Controller's HOST prompt.  Then drop down to the ILOM using ESC ( as noted above.
    -> exit
    [root@pilot1 ~]# exit
    logout
    WN508002000XXXXXX1 # exit

    WN508002000XXXXXX1 login:
    Serial console stopped.
    ->

  7. Be sure the Serial Console is stopped, if you have doubts, execute a stop command:
    -> stop /HOST/Console
    Are you sure you want to stop /HOST/console (y/n)? y
    stop: Console is not in use

    ->

    NOTE: Failure to stop the redirection of the Console output will have a negative affect on internal communications within the FS1-2.
