Goal

The goal of this document is to describe how to upgrade the Power Supply A261 (P/N 7302922) Firmware on SPARC M7 series server.

When running SysFW 9.5.2.g or later, it is possible to check the Power Supply FW revision from Restricted Shell

-> set SESSION mode=restricted

WARNING: The "Restricted Shell" account is provided solely
to allow Services to perform diagnostic tasks.

[(restricted_shell) <hostname>:~]$

[(restricted_shell) <hostname>:~]$ hw version | grep /SYS/PS0
359. /SYS/PS0/MICRO (A261) Version: F0=3.18, F1=3.17, F2=3.8
360. /SYS/PS0/SUPPLY/PS (A261) Version: F0=3.18, F1=3.17, F2=3.8

The version should be decode from the F0/F1/F2 values reported in the above output.

PSU FW revision Version
FW29 F0=3.18, F1=3.17, F2=3.8
FW30 F0=3.18, F1=3.17, F2=3.10

Note : the 'hw version' output is collected by snapshot so can be checked prior to the power supply replacement as well.

When applying the FW image as described below, the system will check the PS FW for each PSU and will update when appropriate; ie. only if update is required.

If an attempt is made to install the Hardware_Programmables-1.0.x-SPARC_M7-Systems.pkg file on a system where the installation is not required, the installation will not update any of the Power Supplies.

When replacing a Power Supply, the procedure described below must be applied to check and update the FW when/if needed. For a PSU replacement, only this PSU might have a downrev FW and may be updated. Otherwise all of the downrev power supplies will be updated.

No Service processor reset, host restart or platform power cycle is required when performing a PS FW upgrade.

Solution

1. Obtain the firmware image from MOS

Log to My Oracle Support, from the Patches and Updates tab, "Patch Search" select "Product or Family (Advanced)".

Select the Product as SPARC M7-8 or M7-16 and from the Release list, select ...

Click Search and download the appropriate image.

 HWP File PSU FW revision Note
1.0.7.a

SPARC M7-SYSTEMS HW PROGRAMMABLES 1.0.7.a

Patch 26964022

FW30

'hw version' output

F0=3.18, F1=3.17, F2=3.10

Check the associated README file for any specific instruction.

The downloaded zip file contains the .pkg file : Hardware_Programmables-1.0.x-SPARC_M7-Systems.pkg

Place the firmware image on a server supporting one of the following protocols: TFTP, FTP, SFTP, SCP, HTTP, or HTTPS.

2. Apply the PSU FW image

BUI can be used to update PSU FW only when SysFW version 9.8.0.c or higher is installed.
Command line upgrade of PSU firmware is required for SysFW version earlier than 9.8.0.c.

From the Active SP, apply the image by running

-> load -source http://n.n.n.n/Hardware_Programmables-1.0.x-SPARC_M7.pkg

The load command supports the following protocols : TFTP, FTP, SFTP, SCP, HTTP, or HTTPS.

Power Supply FW update takes about 10 minutes per Power Supply. After a Power Supply replacement, only the downrev Power Supplies will be updated.

For instance on M7-16 :

-> load -source http://0.0.0.0/Hardware_Programmables-1.0.7-SPARC_M7-Systems.pkg

NOTE: An upgrade takes several minutes to complete. ILOM
      will enter a special mode to load new firmware. No
      other tasks can be performed in ILOM until the
      firmware upgrade is complete and ILOM is reset.

NOTE: HOST0 is powered on; HOST0 firmware will be updated
      automatically when HOST0 is restarted.

Note: In the above, the 2 * "NOTE:" and message about ILOM and host restart are irrelevant as no SP or host reset is required

Note: BUI can be used to update PSU FW only when SysFW version 9.8.0.c or higher is installed.  Command line upgrade of PSU firmware is required for SysFW version earlier than 9.8.0.c.

3. Important notes

3.1 No update required

If no update is required, the logs will just return "FW up to date".

11726  Mon Oct 12 14:39:26 2015  Firmware  Update    minor
       Performing ECO E0027524 on /SYS/PS1: FW up to date.

3.2 PS FW update failure

If the PS FW upgrade fails, it may be worth trying to run the command again. If it persists, the PSU should be replaced

8173   Mon Oct 26 14:18:18 2015  Firmware  Update    minor
       ECO E0027524 update for /SYS/PS3 failed.

3.3 PS without AC power

A PS with no AC power cannot be upgraded and will be skipped

8173   Mon Oct 26 14:18:18 2015  Firmware  Update    minor
       Performing ECO E0027524 on /SYS/PS7: skipping, faulted.

3.4 PS removal/insertion messages

During the PS FW upgrade, the PS is temporarily out of the ILOM control so ILOM will report the removal/insertion of the PS.

This can be safely ignored and any possible associated SPT-8000-7J / Fault fault.chassis.power.missing will be automatically cleared.

Note that for some reason that insertion message can be delayed and appears later.

3.5 Spurious corruption fault against PS

When running SysFW 9.4.3.d (fixed in 9.5.2), some spurious fault may be reported against the PS being upgraded.

The fault can be ignored and the fault should be cleared from FMA fault management shell (fmadm acquit).
